Colonials Sweep Second Straight DH; Time Change Sunday

Moon Township, Pa. - Junior outfielder Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) went 4-for-6 with a run scored and a steal to extend her hitting streak to a career-high and team season-best 10 games as she helped the Robert Morris University softball team sweep its second consecutive Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader, 2-0 and 3-1 over Wagner, on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.

Junior Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Latrobe Area) and freshman Geena Badolato (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) were brilliant in the circle for RMU as they combined to allow just eight hits and one run while striking out 16 Seahawk batters.

Patton, who led the nation in sacrifice hits per game entering the week, recorded a pair of multi-hit games and now has at least two hits in four consecutive games, a career best. She has nine hits in her last 14 at bats and is hitting a scorching .469 (15-of-32) during her current hitting streak.

Redshirt junior Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del / St. Mark's) went 3-for-5 in the double-dip with a sacrifice fly and a run scored and now has seven hits in her last 11 at bats.

After Bryson retired the side in order in the first in Game One, RMU had an early chance to move on top when junior outfielder Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) led off the game with a bunt single and Calderone followed with another base hit one out later. After a groundout advanced runners to second and third, another groundout ended the threat.

Wagner recorded a two-out hit in the top of the second, and Patton did the same for RMU in the bottom of the third, but neither team could knock in a run.

After Bryson worked around a two-out walk in the fourth, senior Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) singled to left to start the bottom half. Sophomore Maritza Jimenez (Vineland, N.J. / Vineland) put down a sacrifice, sending Dubovec to second with one out, but Robert Morris couldn't find a hole as consecutive lineouts ended the inning.

Bryson worked her way out of her most dangerous jam in the fifth even though it wasn't entirely of her making. The Seahawks put the lead runner on via a Colonial miscue. The ensuing Wagner hitter tried to get down a bunt, but she popped it up, and RMU freshman first baseman Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) showcased impressive reflexes by snagging it out of midair as it was sailing by her head. After a strikeout, a walk and an error loaded the bases for Wagner. However, Bryson showed great resiliency by recording a three-pitch strikeout to leave the sacks full.

Robert Morris finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the home half, aided in part by some Seahawk errors. Sophomore Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) reached to start the frame via a miscue, and classmate Jessica Tanigawa (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville-Pitchuck) subsequently pinch-ran for her. Freshman shortstop Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) followed with a sacrifice, sending Tanigawa to second.

Gallagher then bounced a ball to the left side, and her speed may have caused the Seahawk infielder to rush the throw to first as it bounced away down the right field line, allowing Tanigawa to score standing and Gallagher to reach second. Patton then singled hard up the middle as Gallagher had to hold at third. Calderone then delivered a sacrifice fly to center as Gallagher just beat a strong throw to the plate.

Wagner tried to start a two-out rally in the sixth with a walk and a single, but Bryson again ended the Seahawk momentum with a three-pitch 'K'.  The Seahawks put their leadoff hitter on in the seventh, but Bryson retired the final three in order, the last two via strikeout, to give RMU the win.

Bryson registered her first shutout of the season as she conceded just three hits. She notched 10 K's on the afternoon, marking the fourth occasion of the season and the 18th of her career in which she has hit at least that number and is now just one strikeout shy of becoming the third pitcher in RMU history to reach the 500-K milestone.

Badolato picked up where Bryson left off as she retired Wagner in order to start Game Two. Patton and Calderone both singled to right with one out to start a rally in the home half. With two outs, Jimenez legged out an infield hit to load the bases, and then Siar delivered with a sharply hit ball through the middle to score a pair. Junior catcher Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) continued the inning with a single, but a groundout ended the frame.

After a leadoff Seahawk single in the second, Badolato sent down six Wagner hitters in succession. Calderone singled to the opposite field again to open the third and took second on a sacrifice by Dubovec, but was stranded there.

Badolato wasn't bothered by a two-out single in the fourth as a groundout ended the top half. Show put down a one-out bunt single and promptly swiped second in the home half but could advance no further.

Each team put its leadoff batter on in the fifth, but neither squad could take advantage.

Wagner scored its first run of the day with two outs in the sixth when a single and a double to right center plated a run. Badolato was able to maintain the lead though as she got a bouncer to Show to end the inning.

Robert Morris would get the single tally back in the bottom half. Capp singled up the middle with one out and took second on a sacrifice by Show. Head Coach Craig Coleman, M.D., then called upon freshman Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) to pinch hit, and the rookie came through with a solid single to left that plated pinch-runner Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear).

Badolato retired the side in order in the seventh on two groundouts and a strikeout to claim the win. The freshman allowed five hits and did not walk a single batter while striking out six.

RMU hit .313 on the afternoon while Badolato and Bryson held the Seahawks to a .157 mark.

The Colonials will look to continue their winning streak Sunday, but they will have a challenge on their hands as they face defending NEC champion Long Island. The first pitch of the doubleheader is now set for 11:00 a.m. as the start time was moved up in hopes of avoiding inclement weather later in the afternoon.
