Robert Morris Falls in Double OT in Semifinals

Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. - Playing in its first postseason game in program history, the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team came back from a three-goal deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Colonials were unable to hang on as second-seeded Quinnipiac survived, 12-11 in double overtime, in the opening Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament semifinal Friday evening at Mount St. Mary's Waldron Family Stadium.

RMU was on a 5-0 run and had taken a two-goal lead at the end of the third quarter, but the game was then interrupted for over 80 minutes due to a lightning delay. After play resumed, the Bobcats outscored the Colonials 3-1 in the game's final regulation frame to force overtime.

Robert Morris had the edge in shots on goal, ground balls, faceoffs, and successful clear percentage, but it was simply not enough to top the Bobcats.

Senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) scored twice for Robert Morris to break the Colonials' single-season points record that Moore himself had set in 2010. With his two scores, Moore finished the season with exactly 50 tallies, also a single-season school record, and added 11 helpers for a total of 61 points.

Junior captain Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) led RMU with a team-high four points as he notched his seventh-career hat trick and added an assist. Senior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) also collected a hat trick for RMU, the 21st of his career, and also grabbed six ground balls.

Tao-Brambleby started the game off with a bang for RMU as he scored just 16 seconds into the opening frame. Quinnipiac was able to limit the Colonials through the remainder of the first quarter, though, and tallied a pair of scores to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Junior Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) tied it up with a goal early in the second, but the Bobcats responded with consecutive scores to take the game's first two-goal lead. After Moore scored with 10:44 to play in the second, registering a point in his 45th-consecutive game, Quinnipiac again scored back-to-back goals, giving the Bobcats a 6-3 advantage.

The squads alternated each of the next four scores, putting the Bobcats in front 8-5 with 3:19 to play in the first half. Moore was able to put one in with under two minutes to play to set the halftime margin at two.

Robert Morris came out of the halftime break and absolutely took control in the third quarter. Matisz scored twice while Tao-Brambleby and senior captain Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) also added tallies as RMU outscored Quinnipiac 4-0 in the frame to take a 10-8 lead. Smith's score allowed him to become just the third Colonial in history to hit the 100-goal plateau.

Although there was relatively little rainfall at the field itself, the threat of storms in the surrounding area then proceeded to cause a long delay.

After the break, neither team could find the net for over nine minutes before Matisz struck with a little over five minutes to play. The Bobcats were able to turn the tide and soon began to work their way back into the game. Quinnipiac tallied a trio of goals in the closing minutes to knot the game, 11-11, but not without controversy. The Bobcats' 11th tally found the cage with the clock hitting 0:00, and the officials had to confer before choosing to count the goal.

Robert Morris had a decided edge in the first overtime as the Colonials outshot the Bobcats, 6-1, but simply could not find the netting. The Colonials then drew a penalty that commenced with the start of the second overtime, but were unable convert on the man-up opportunity. Quinnipiac's Christian Haggerty ended the contest with a goal 21 seconds into the second extra session.

The defeat completed a record-setting career for Moore, the national leader in goals per game, as he finished his time at RMU with 134 goals, 61 assists and 195 points, all Robert Morris records.

The game marked the final collegiate contest for each of RMU's 13 seniors, a group that brought the Colonial lacrosse program to new heights. The 2011 class will depart Robert Morris as the winningest class in program history as they notched three consecutive winning seasons to conclude their careers; they also played a large role in helping RMU claim its first victory over a nationally-ranked program along with earning RMU's first national ranking in school history.
