Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. - Liberty quarterback Mike Brown passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to help lead the No. 21 Flames to a 38-7 victory over the Robert Morris University football team Saturday night at Williams Stadium.

The loss, RMU's fourth straight dating back to the 2010 campaign, dips the Colonials to 0-2 to start the 2011 season, while Liberty improved to 1-1.

Brown gave the Flames an early 7-0 lead when he scored on a five-yard touchdown run at the 6:07 mark of the first quarter to cap a two-play, 12-yard drive. Liberty had great field position thanks to B.J. Hayes, who returned a punt by freshman Tony LaMancusa (Tonawanda, N.Y. / St. Joseph's) 30 yards to the RMU 12-yard line.

The Flames extended their lead to 14-0 with 43 seconds to play in the first quarter when Brown hit Pat Kelly for a 39-yard touchdown pass. Robert Morris was only down two touchdowns at the break thanks to owning a time of possession advantage of 18:52 to 11:08 in the first half, but the Colonials couldn't reach Liberty territory in the first half.

In the third quarter Brown gave Liberty a 21-0 lead with a seven-yard touchdown run that was set up the defense of the Flames. On 3rd-and-8 from the RMU seven-yard line, junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) tried to hit sophomore wide receiver Donte Jeter (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oliver) in the flat, but Kevin Fogg came up with the interception and returned it to the four-yard line of the Colonials. Three plays later Brown scored to give the Flames a three touchdown advantage.

Brown would cap his evening with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ferguson with 1:50 to play in the third quarter that gave Liberty a 28-0 lead.

Robert Morris finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, as Sinclair engineered a 12-play, 67-yard drive that was capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Vince Mongelluzzo (Delmont, Pa. / Greensburg Salem) on 4th-and-1. It marked the first career reception for Mongelluzzo, while Sinclair finished 4-for-4 passing during the drive for 26 yards.

Despite the touchdown, Fogg answered by returning the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to give Liberty a 35-7 advantage. The Flames would eventually settle the score at 38-7 with a 23-yard field goal from Matt Blevins with 2:17 to play that capped a 12-play, 69-yard drive.

Brown finished 13-for-22 passing on the evening for 209 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the Liberty ground game with 11 rushes for 43 yards and a pair of scores. Kelly paced the receiving corps of the Flames with four catches for 75 yards and a score.

Sinclair finished 12-for-26 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted three times. The freshman tailback duo of Justin Brooks (St. Charles, Md. / McDonough) and Duane Mitchell (Monroe Falls, Ohio / Stow) combined for 114 yards on 30 carries, with Brooks producing 86 yards on 22 attempts.

Senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman (Cheltenham, Md. / St. John's College High School) finished with six catches for 59 yards, while senior tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one catch to 21 dating back to the 2009 campaign by recording two receptions for 24 yards.
