Box Score 2 Moon Township, Pa. - Junior opposite hitter Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) drilled a career-high 17 kills Friday afternoon against Texas-Pan American and then promptly hit at a career-high .571 mark Friday evening against Morgan State to lead the Robert Morris University volleyball team to a pair of wins on the opening day of the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Classic at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
The Colonials had to come from behind against the Broncs after dropping a tight opening set, but they responded nicely by winning each of the ensuing three games, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21, to take the match. In the nightcap, RMU was in control for essentially the entire way as it easily handled the Lady Bears, 25-14, 25-15, 25-11.
Robert Morris' win over Morgan State produced numerous impressive team statistics as it had an advantage in nearly every significant statistical category. The Colonials hit .395 as a team, only the third time they have reached that level since 2005, while holding the Lady Bears to a .013 mark for the match, marking RMU's best differential in the hitting percentage category since 2005. RMU had not held a non-conference opponent to a hitting mark that low since 2007 and also conceded the fewest overall points in a match since October 2008.
Craig produced a career and match-high 17 kills against Texas-Pan American, hitting .441, while also contributing eight digs, a season-high five blocks and five assists. She followed that brilliant effort with yet another as she nailed a match-high 12 kills in the finale without committing a single hitting error to hit a career-best .571. It is the third time in Craig's career in which she knocked down double-figure kills in back-to-back matches, the first time she has hit at least .400 in consecutive matches and the most kills she has tallied in a match without making a hitting error.
Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) aided Craig offensively by tallying 12 kills, along with tying her season high with seven blocks, in the opener before hitting a season-high .562 against Morgan State courtesy of 11 kills and just two errors. Veith has now reached double-digit kills in seven of her last nine matches, the first such stretch of her career.
Junior outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) and freshman setter Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) both helped Robert Morris Friday as each added a double-double in the tournament opener. Monger notched 13 kills and 12 digs against the Broncs, collecting her team-leading fifth double-double, and then added 10 kills and a match-high seven digs in the team's second match. Hoffman registered 41 assists and tied her season high with 10 digs for her second double-double and also helped the cause with a season-best four blocks and four kills on just five attempts.
Robert Morris came storming out of the gates to open the day, taking an early 7-1 lead, but Texas-Pan American immediately returned the favor to even the set, 8-8. RMU came back to win each of the next three points and still led by a similar margin, 23-19, with the set wrapping up. However, the Broncs won five straight points to get a set point at 24-23. The Colonials claimed back-to-back rallies to save a set point and earn one of their own, but the Broncs would follow by winning three consecutive exchanges to take the set, 27-25.
Texas-Pan American used a 5-0 spurt to break a 7-7 deadlock in the second set and would hold the lead for most of the game. With the Broncs still up by four, 20-16, the Colonials used their final timeout, and it would prove to provide a spark. RMU went on a 9-2 run to close the set, using four kills (from four different Colonials), two aces, two blocks and a Broncs' hitting error, to even the match.
With the squads knotted at 10 in the third game, the Colonials won three straight points to take a slim edge. RMU still held this slight advantage at 19-16, and the teams then proceeded to alternate winning each of the next 12 points, which naturally produced a RMU victory in the set.
Robert Morris took an early 6-2 edge in the fourth set and would maintain this lead until the finish as the Colonials never trailed in the final game. Texas-Pan American cut the lead to a single point on two occasions, but RMU held strong and eventually pushed its lead out to six points before closing out the win. Robert Morris finished the match in style by hitting at a .436 clip in the fourth set.
RMU had an easier time in the day's final match as it led Morgan State for the entire match, save for a few brief moments early in the first set. The Colonials hit at least .310 in each of the three sets, including posting a ridiculous .517 figure in the opening game.
The Colonials broke a 6-6 tie with a key 8-1 run to take command of the first set as freshman middle blocker Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) came up big during the stretch with a kill, a solo block and an ace. RMU led by at least five the rest of the way and gradually expanded its lead into double figures to take the lead in the match.
After taking six of the first 10 points in the second set, Robert Morris used an 8-2 run to really take control of the game, opening up a 14-6 advantage. Robert Morris would lead by at least seven points for the duration of the set and led by as many as 12 points down the stretch in taking a two-set cushion.
The third game was by no means close in the early going as the Colonials essentially clinched the match by taking a commanding 10-2 lead. Morgan State could get no closer than six as Robert Morris cruised to a 14-point, final-set victory.
Freshman Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) recorded a match-high 17 digs against the Broncs, tallying her eighth double-figure dig match of the year. Junior outside hitter Una Japundza (Rovinj, Croatia / Zvane Crnja) helped RMU off the bench in the opening match by tying her career high with seven digs before she totaled a career-high and match-high three aces against Morgan State.
Monger has now reached double figures in kills in eight of her last nine matches.
Jay finished with a match-high five blocks against Morgan State, helping RMU post 18 blocks in seven sets on the day, while Hoffman added a match-high 27 assists against the Lady Bears.
The Colonials will conclude play in the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Classic Saturday afternoon with a match against Eastern Michigan at 5:00 p.m. The Eagles won their opening match of the tournament Friday afternoon to improve to 10-2 on the season and should provide a stiff test as RMU seeks its third-consecutive win.
