STORRS, Conn. – Jan. 20, 2012 – Trevor Lewis notched
two assists and moved within a point of sixth-place on the Robert Morris men's
hockey career points list as the Colonials topped UConn 4-3 on Friday Night at
Freitas Ice Forum, snapping the Huskies four-game winning streak in the
process. Cody Crichton, Tom Brooks, Colin South and Cody Wydo tallied goals for
RMU while Eric Levine picked up the win to remain unbeaten in his last four
games.
Robert
Morris (11-9-3 overall, 9-4-3) took its first lead of the night at 12:53 of the
first period when senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton
Capitals) notched his fifth goal of the season. The forward, who would add an
assist for a team-high 19 points this year, was set up by freshman forward Cody Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) and senior forward Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars). The first-period lead was a good omen for
the Colonials, who improved to 5-0-0 on year when leading after the first
period.
If
Crichton's goal was an omen, the Colonials certainly took it to heart in the
second period – ripping three-straight goals in the stanza to jump out to a 4-0
lead. Senior forward Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) snapped a
seven-game goal drought at 5:40 of the second for his third point in as many
games. Lewis tallied his second assist of the night on the play for his 71st
career point – one shy of tying Jason Towsley (2005-09) for sixth all-time at
Robert Morris. Lewis' pair of assists also tied Towsley for seventh on the
program's career assists list with 43. Sophomore forward Colin South (Sewickley,
Pa. / Bay State Breakers) would net his fifth goal of the year at 9:30 with an
assist from freshman forward Cody Cartier (Sylvan Lake, Alberta / Canmore
Eagles).
Wydo
nabbed the eventual game winner with a power-play goal at 15:09 for his
team-high 12th goal of the season, moving the newcomer within a goal of Chris
Margott's Colonial freshman record set in 2005-06. The goal tied Wydo with
Michigan's Alex Guptill for second among all NCAA freshman this year – one off
the nation's lead. Senior forward Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State
Breakers) and Crichton would add assists on the goal to complete a three-goal
period for RMU, which has outscored opponents 29-14 in the second period this
season.
UConn
(10-11-2, 9-7-1) would get on the board late in the second period with a goal
from Jordan Sims and threaten a late comeback with a pair of goals in the third
from Sean Ambrosie and Billy Latta, but the Colonials would hold on to pick up
the win. Latta's goal came with just under three minutes left to play during a
5-on-3 advantage for the Huskies, but it wouldn't be enough. The two-man
advantage goal capped a 1-for-6 performance for UConn on the power play while
Robert Morris went 1-for-3 on the night.
Junior
goaltender Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) stopped 31
shots in the win – extending his unbeaten streak to four games. The junior has
stopped 31 or more shots in all four of those games and improved to 6-2-1 on
the year with the win – improving his Atlantic Hockey-best winning percentage
to .722. Garrett Bartus took the loss for UConn to fall to 10-11-2 on the year.
Bartus made 14 saves in just under 40 minutes of work before behind replaced
for the first time this season by Matt Grogan. Grogan made three saves in the
relief appearance.
The
Colonials close out the weekend series at UConn tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
