Box Score Providence, R.I. - A day after the Colonials took down Providence in the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Friars returned the favor to the Robert Morris University women's hockey team Saturday afternoon as the hosts scored a late special-teams goal and added an empty-netter for a 3-1 victory in non-conference action at Schneider Arena.
Despite the defeat, Saturday's game marked the sixth-consecutive contest in which Robert Morris has rallied from a deficit to tie the score at some point during the game.
Junior Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) tallied Robert Morris' score to become the ninth Colonial in program history to hit the 20-goal figure. Her goal also moved her into sole possession of ninth place on RMU's all-time points with 44 and allowed her to reach double figures in goals in a season for the first time in her career.
Senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) provided the assist on Thomas' goal to extend her program records in all-time points (112) and all-time assists (63).
Robert Morris held the Friars scoreless on the power play for the second straight game as it kept Providence off the board on 10 power play attempts in the series.
After the teams each took three shots in the early going of the first period, the Friars were granted a power play. Providence generated pressure with the man advantage as it had five shot attempts during the chance, but Robert Morris withstood the charge. However, not long after the power play finished, senior Laura Veharanta blasted a one-timer that found its way into the cage to push Providence ahead, 1-0.
Within three minutes after the Colonials fell behind, RMU nearly found a quick equalizer when a shot from junior Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) hit the post and didn't go in.
Robert Morris was then forced to spend four of the final five minutes shorthanded as Providence received two power plays, but the Colonials were able to keep the Friars at bay and hold the deficit at a single goal after one period.
The Colonials immediately tied the score early in the second as Thomas skated in on a two-on-one with the puck and fired it top-shelf to even the game.
RMU killed off another Friar power play in the first half of the second period but was unable to use the momentum to pull ahead despite outshooting Providence during the session.
After the teams were relatively even over the first half of the final frame, Providence found the decisive goal at the 10:48 mark courtesy of Ashley Cottrell.
Robert Morris controlled most of the play after the Friar's go-ahead goal, outshooting Providence 6-2 until the hosts' empty-net goal sealed RMU's fate.
In spite of the loss, Robert Morris scored at least one goal in its 62nd straight game, extending the nation's second-largest streak.
Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) notched 23 saves for the Colonials while allowing two scores.
This series with the Friars nearly completed RMU's non-conference schedule as the Colonials will play 10 of their final 11 games within College Hockey America (CHA) play. After a weekend off, Robert Morris will return to the ice Friday, Jan. 20, as it kicks off a home-and-home series with perennial power No. 5 Mercyhurst.
