Box Score Providence, R.I. - Freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) hammered home a rebound with just 2:26 remaining in regulation to break a tie and lift the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a 3-2 road victory against Providence Friday evening at Schneider Arena.
The win was the Colonials' 12th of the season, which ties the previous program record with 12 regular-season games remaining. RMU also remained undefeated on the road this season as it improved to 7-0-1 in such contests, establishing a new school record for road wins in a season in the process.
Vint's game-winning goal was her team-leading third of the season and extended her current point streak to four games. She also moved into sole possession of third place on the Colonials' single-season goals list with 16.
Junior Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres), the reigning CHA Goaltender of the Week, was a key factor in the outcome as she posted a career-high 43 saves, including an amazing 20 in the third period alone. With the win, DiCiocco also broke RMU's single-season record for goalie victories, topping the mark that U.S. Olympian Brianne McLaughlin had initially set atop the charts. DiCiocco also aided the Colonial penalty-kill corps to a perfect 6-for-6 mark when the Friars skated on the power play.
Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) tallied her sixth multi-point game of the campaign as she scored Robert Morris' opening goal to even the game and then eventually added the primary assist on Vint's winning score. Imbrogno became the seventh Colonial to surpass the 50-point plateau for her career and just the eighth to hit the 20-goal mark.
Junior Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) notched RMU's other goal, tallying her 15th career score. Delaney's goal was assisted by her older sister, senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders). The elder Delaney has now assisted on nine of Cobina's last 13 goals.
Robert Morris was put under pressure in the early going as the Colonials were forced to kill off two Friar power plays within the first 12 minutes. The visitors only allowed two shots during these chances, but the repeated shorthanded play may have caught up to them not too much later. Ashley Cottrell lit the lamp for Providence on a partial breakaway at the 13:04 mark to open the scoring.
RMU had to kill a third power play in the period in the final five minutes of action, and the Colonials were once again successful to keep the margin at one heading into the first intermission.
Imbrogno would tie the game 10 seconds after midway mark courtesy of a penalty shot that she earned as she was interfered with by a Friar skater. Imbrogno initially faked a forehand on the penalty shot and then drew the puck to the left side of the cage before utilizing a forehand to even the game.
After the score stood 1-1, Providence was granted another power play fewer than four minutes later. DiCiocco came up big for the Colonials, though, as she stopped seven shots over the ensuing two minutes to keep the game tied after 40 minutes of play.
Robert Morris took the lead at the 5:14 mark of the third when Cobina Delaney scored on a 2-on-1 with classmate Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks). Thomas and Brianna Delaney were credited with assists on the play.
Providence had a great chance to even the game when it received 3:18 of consecutive power-play time, including a 42-second 5-on-3 advantage near the middle portion of the final frame. DiCiocco and the Colonials were up to the task as Robert Morris held the Friars to just one shot during this entire timeframe.
The Friars would soon even the proceedings, though, as a strange bounce off the end boards helped lead to a Providence goal with just under six minutes remaining.
That set the stage for Vint's heroics.
DiCiocco made three saves in the final 70 seconds as Providence skated with the extra attacker in search of the tying goal.
Friday's game marked the fifth-consecutive contest in which Robert Morris has fallen behind and rallied to tie the score at some point during the game.
Robert Morris also continued a recent positive trend by blocking 21 oppositions shot attempts. It marked the ninth time in the past 16 games in which RMU blocked at least 20 shots.
The Colonials will go for the series sweep Saturday afternoon as the squads hit the ice at 1:00 p.m. RMU will be seeking its third win in its last four tries against the Friars.
