Box Score Hamden, Conn. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team won their third straight game to open Northeast Conference play as they swept Quinnipiac in straight sets on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 25-8, 25-23, 25-14.
Robert Morris (7-11, 3-0 NEC) took the match in rather dominant fashion as they won the three sets by an average of ten points. In a total team effort, three Colonials managed over five kills in the match as senior Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) led the team with a match-high seven kills while hitting .357. Sophomore Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) paced Robert Morris with a match-high eighteen assists on the team's 34 kills. Two Colonials, including Hoffman, recorded a match-high two service aces. Four RMU student-athletes recorded five or more digs in the match including senior Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) who each had eight digs. Robb also assisted on four of the team's six blocks which included a solo block from fellow sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan).
The first set saw the Colonials dominate as they came out of the gate and scored five of the first six points in the set. Quinnipiac would pull to within three with the score 8-5 before Robert Morris would go on a 6-0 run. A 5-0 run for the Colonials would follow shortly after as the team expanded their lead to thirteen. A 6-2 run would end the set as the Colonials were victorious 25-8.
The second set was played much closer as Quinnipiac would come out and hold a 5-10 advantage. The Bobcats would hold the five-point advantage through the majority of the set. With the score 11-16, The Colonials would rally as they did not allow Quinnipiac to string together any points in succession. Robert Morris finally pulled even with the Bobcats as the score was tied at 22. In a race to 25, the Colonials would collect three of the next four points to complete the comeback to win the set 25-23.
In the final set, the two team started out evenly matched as neither of them held more than a two-point advantage. With the score tied at ten, the Colonials would promptly take the next four points to take control of a lead they would never let go as they embarked on a 15-4 run for the victory. Robert Morris controlled service possession as they managed runs of six, three, and four points in succession. RMU pulled away with the final set by the score of 25-14.
Robert Morris returns to the comfort of the Charles L. Sewall Center as they host Saint Francis (Pa.) this Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The match will be a part of a conference-wide Dig Pink initiative to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. The team will be taking donations to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation as a part of the event.
