RMU Ties No. 7 Northeastern

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - The Robert Morris University women's hockey tied nationally ranked Northeastern University, 3-3 in a non-conference match up Friday evening at Matthews Arena.  The contest marked the sixth meeting of the two teams in RMU program history.

Senior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) led the RMU scoring effort as she tallied the first hatrick of her career registering a goal in each regulation period of the contest.  With the hat trick, Thomas becomes just the fifth player in RMU program history to tally at least three goals in a single contest and becomes the first player to do so against a nationally ranked opponent.

The Northeastern Huskies got on the board first as they scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the game.  Sophomore forward Kendall Coyne scored both goals for the Huskies while Rachel Lianes tallied tallied an assist on both goals and Maggie DiMasi notched the secondary assist on the Northeastern first goal.

RMU got on the board with a score of its own when assistant captain Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) passed to Thomas who found the net with 3:27 to play in the first period.  Sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) was awarded with the secondary assist on the Colonials first score.  Thomas' score marks her first of her senior campaign while Delaney dishes out her second assist of the season.

With both teams fighting hard for the majority of the second period, RMU would win the battle as it tied the game 3:23 left on the clock.  The Colonials tied the game at two-a-piece as Thomas and Vint would again connect for the second time in the evening.

Just 4:55 into the third period Northeastern would take the lead as Rachel Lianes tallied her third point of the game and second goal of the season.

With only 27 seconds remaining in the game, Thomas would put home a spectacular extra attacker goal to score her third of the game forcing an overtime period.  With the goal, Delaney registered her second assist of the contest while junior forward Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) picked up her first assist.

While wored hard for the victory in the five minute overtime period, the contest would end in a 3-3 draw.

Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) received the start in net for RMU.  DiCiocco registered a game-high 36 saves, 15 of which came in the second period.

Thomas, Delaney and Vint all tallied multi-point efforts for the Colonials.  With the multi-point effort, Thomas has now notched four points in RMU's previous two games while Vint has now registered three points in two games. Richards is the lone Colonials to tally a point in each game so far this season for RMU.

This contest marks the third straight contest where the Colonials have remained unbeaten by a nationally ranked opponent. RMU hopes to continue this streak as it takes on No. 3 Boston University tomorrow in a contest set to start at 2:00 p.m.
