Box Score Denver, Colo. - Junior Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta / Central Memorial) supplied one of the best offensive efforts in program history Saturday, becoming just the second Colonial ever to notch seven goals in a single game as the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team knocked off Air Force, 17-14, in the opening game of the DU Face-Off Classic hosted by Denver at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
As if tying the single-game school record for goals wasn't enough, Hayes also added an assist to tie the program's single-game points record of eight, which had been achieved three times prior to Saturday--but never away from home. Perhaps the most remarkable attribute about Hayes' performance was that his seven goals came on just seven shots as he scored each time he fired at the cage. Hayes' perfect mark from Saturday continues a career-long trend as the junior has now scored his 32 career goals on just 42 shots (.762).
While Hayes was busy tying single-game RMU records, one of his teammates broke an all-time mark. Senior midfielder Mike Grosz (St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway West) tallied five ground balls on the day to claim sole possession of first place at Robert Morris in career GB with 157. Grosz won 13 of 21 faceoffs against the Falcons, winning at least 60% for the second time in three games this season, and also contributed offensively by scoring his second-career goal to open the second half.
Robert Morris fell behind a few times in the very early going but never by more than one goal. The Colonials trailed for just 4:27 in all and never let Air Force take the lead in the final three quarters as RMU built up a five-goal lead and hung on for the win. Robert Morris started a season 3-0 for the just the second time in the program's young history with Saturday's result.
Senior Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) notched two goals and two assists to take home at least three points for the seventh time in his last eight outings while notching his 15th-career multi-goal game.
Seniors Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep.) and Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) both contributed three points for RMU with the former tallying a trio of assists and the latter putting home two goals and adding in a helper. It was Abbott's second straight three-point game while Buchanan's two scores allowed him to become the ninth Colonial to hit the 40-goal mark for a career. Buchanan earned his 26th multi-point game and 10th multi-goal game in the process.
Air Force took leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, but RMU quickly worked to reverse the slim advantage. The Colonials took control by scoring four goals, two by redshirt senior Kevin Brownell (Burlington, Ontario / Central) and two by Hayes, in fewer than 6:30 to take a 6-3 edge.
The Falcons came back with two late goals in the first and one early in the second to tie the game, 6-6, for what proved to be the final time. After Air Force tied it, the Colonials put home four straight scores in just 6:04 to reassert control.
The Falcons managed to cut the deficit to three, 11-8, at the end of the first half.
Grosz and Hayes opened the scoring in the second half to open up the game's biggest lead of the day, 13-8, early in the third quarter. Air Force began to battle back, though, and went on a 5-1 run over the remainder of the quarter to cut the margin to just one, 14-13.
The Falcons had a couple of chances to tie it early in the fourth, but RMU pushed its lead back to two when junior Tyler Digby (Westminster, British Columbia / New Westminster) scored. Air Force came right back to cut the lead to 15-14 and had a chance to tie it with a man-advantage opportunity, but Hayes' record-tying tally came at just the right time.
Hayes netted a man-down goal with 7:25 to play with the assist coming courtesy of freshman defenseman Luc Magnan (Pine Falls, Manitoba / The Hill Academy), who took home his first-collegiate point on the play.
Freshman Jacob Ruest (Cornwall, Ontario / The Hill Academy) scored just 34 seconds later to give Robert Morris a three-goal lead, a cushion which would remain for the duration of the contest.
Brownell became the eighth Colonial to hit the 60-point plateau as his 18th multi-point game doubled as his 10th multi-goal contest.
Digby added an assist to collect the sixth multi-point game of his career while redshirt junior Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario / Hill School) tallied a pair of assists to take home the fifth multi-point outing of his career.
The man down goal for RMU was its first of the season and 12th in school history. The 12 assists by RMU are tied for the fourth-highest single-game team total in program history.
RMU outshot Air Force, 43-31, for the game and also had advantages in faceoffs, clearing percentage and shots on goal.
Robert Morris will finish its stretch of four-consecutive games away from home to start the season Sunday as it concludes play in Denver's tournament. The Colonials will meet the host Pioneers, a 2011 Final Four participant, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
