Staten Island, N.Y. - Down to its final out in its doubleheader opener against Wagner, the Robert Morris University softball team staged a stunning rally and came from behind to claim a 4-3, extra-inning victory in Northeast Conference (NEC) action Sunday afternoon at Wagner Field.
The Colonials pulled off an improbable feat as they again staved off defeat in Game Two by scoring two runs with two outs in the seventh, but the host Seahawks were able to break the tie in the eighth and claim a 8-7 victory.
Freshman Samantha Santillo (Ellwood City, Pa. / Lincoln) was the offensive star for the Colonials as she went 5-for-8 and blasted the first two homers of her rookie season. Her second long ball was a clutch, two-out, two-run shot in the seventh inning of Game Two that kept RMU alive for the time being. Santillo had previously delivered the game-winning RBI with a two-out single in the eighth inning of the opener.
Santillo collected the fourth and fifth multi-hit games of the season and the third and fourth multi-RBI efforts of her young career. She also tallied her first-ever three-hit game in the nightcap and her initial three-RBI game in the day's opener.
Sophomore Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) had her second straight strong offensive day as she went a combined 4-for-8 with a homer and a double. She nailed her second homer in the last week and notched the eighth multi-hit game of her career, including her first-ever game with three hits. Show now has a trio of multi-RBI outings this season, all of which have come in the team's last five games.
Redshirt senior Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del. / St. Mark's) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two walks in the nightcap to register her sixth multi-hit game of the season and the 48th of her career. Her Game Two performance extended her hitting streak to nine games and also marked the third time in her career in which she notched multiple extra-base hits in one game. Calderone totaled three hits on the day to move into sole possession of fourth place in all-time hits at RMU (176).
Wagner jumped ahead in the opener when it manufactured a run in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.
Junior Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) walked with one out in the second and Santillo followed with a two-run shot to left as she pulled a 1-2 pitch down the line with two gone.
The Seahawks bounced back in the bottom half with a one-out solo homer to even the game, 2-2.
Calderone singled sharply to center to open the third inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by classmate Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) but was stranded in scoring position.
Each of the next two half-innings were of the 1-2-3 variety before RMU worked around two baserunners in the fourth by getting a flyout to end the threat.
Show singled to left center to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan), but she was left at second base.
Wagner took the lead in the bottom half by getting a two-out double that was later followed by a RBI single.
Neither side was able to mount much of a threat in the sixth, so RMU entered the seventh trailing by one. Show singled up the middle with one out and scooted to second on another sacrifice by Gallagher. Calderone hit a hard ground ball to third, which put runners on the corners, and then the senior promptly stole second.
Patton then also hit a hard grounder toward the third baseman that wasn't fielded cleanly at first. Due to Patton's speed, the Seahawks had no choice but to go after Calderone, who got caught up in between second and third. Calderone was able to stay in a rundown long enough before being tagged out to allow Show to cross the plate with the tying run.
The Seahawks put on a runner in the bottom half with a one-out single, but Santillo rifled to second to catch the runner stealing and help send the game to extras.
Senior Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers Houston) worked a full-count walk to start the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice by classmate Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour). After the inning's second out, sophomore Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) worked a seven-pitch walk to keep the inning going. Santillo then shot a single to center that scored a sliding Timko to put RMU ahead, 4-3.
Wagner got a leadoff single in the bottom half and advanced to second on a groundout with two down, but freshman Nicole Sleith (Smithton, Pa. / Yough) notched a swinging strikeout to close out the win.
Sleith earned the win in the circle as she went the distance and scattered six hits. She tallied six strikeouts against just one walk and recorded her fifth complete-game victory in her last five starts.
With its Game One victory, RMU notched its eighth-consecutive win, which tied for its longest winning streak since 2001.
Calderone doubled the third pitch of Game Two to left, but she proved to be the only baserunner of the first inning and was stranded.
Grafton singled with two outs in the second, but it did not lead to anything for the Colonials.
Wagner struck first in the second as it scored a trio of runs on five hits although the Colonials were able to minimize the damage to some degree by leaving the bases loaded.
RMU bounced back with two in the top of the third as Calderone started it with a one-out walk. With two outs, Timko crushed a triple that nailed the fence in right. Capp then singled up the middle to make it 3-2, and Santillo also followed with a single, but Robert Morris left those two on base.
Robert Morris was able to pull even in the fourth when sophomore Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) worked a one-out walk and came around to score when the Seahawks committed a throwing error when Gallagher put down a sacrifice attempt. Calderone then tried to get it going again as she doubled with two outs, but she was thrown out at the plate when Patton knocked a single into right.
Wagner got runners to second and third with one out, but Show handled a popup and a groundout to leave two runners on base.
Timko reached on an error to open the fifth, and Show drilled a homer to straightaway center with two outs to make it 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
Each of the next two half-innings went in order before Wagner rallied with two outs in the sixth. Five consecutive Seahawks reached with two down as Wagner scored four times to turn a two-run deficit into a two-run advantage.
Wagner retired each of the first two Colonials in the seventh, but Capp was able to extend the game with a walk. Santillo then followed by drilling a 2-1 pitch to center that bounced off the top of the fence and caromed over for a thrilling two-run shot.
A single and a wild pitch put a runner on second with one out in bottom half for the hosts, but RMU was able to escape the dangerous situation and again move it to extra frames.
Evans reached on an infield single with one out in the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice by Gallagher, but a fielder's choice ended RMU's chance.
Wagner scored the winning run in the eighth on a leadoff hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice and a two-out single down the line in right.
Timko's triple was the fifth of her career and her 174th hit overall, which currently has her in fifth place all-time at RMU. Timko also scored two more runs and is now just six shy of matching the Colonials' career record in that category.
Robert Morris has now posted double-digit hit totals in six of its past seven games, marking its first such seven-game stretch in over seven years.
After playing its first 26 games away from home, Robert Morris will finally get to play on its own campus this week as it will host doubleheaders Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The Colonials will play their home opener March 28 as they host Cleveland State with the first game starting at 3:00 p.m.
