RMU Finishes Fifth At 2012 NEC Championships

Daytona Beach, Fla. / LPGA International - The Robert Morris University men's golf team finished fifth at the 2012 Northeast Conference Men's Championships played on the Champions Course at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Colonials put together their best score of the event Sunday with a team total 306 that gave them 927 for the championship.

Mount St. Mary's led wire-to-wire, carding a 300 on the final day to finish at 900 even. LIU Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson each scored a 918 to tie for second. Sacred Heart was fourth with a 919 followed by Robert Morris (927), Central Connecticut State (928), Monmouth (927), Saint Francis (Pa.) (931), Wagner (976) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (1,037).

After struggling to a 27th place showing in round one, junior Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) found his game and fought his way back to seventh place overall. Pompeani finished the event with a four-over par 76 Sunday that put his 54-hole total at 228. It was his second consecutive top-10 finish at the league's title event.

Junior Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) wrapped up his tournament by firing a 77 that gave him a 232 for the event. He finished tied for 19th overall. Freshman Ryan Prokay (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) bounced back from a second round 82 to fire the team's lowest score of the third round. Prokay's 75 put his total at 233 strokes and tied him for 22nd overall.

Freshman Bo Lustig (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) needed one more stroke over the 54-hole tournament and that 234 total left him 25th overall. For the third straight day, Lustig finished with a six-over par round of 78. Junior Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) rounded out the contingent of RMU players in a tie for 45th. He totaled 247 strokes following a final round 84.
