RMU Falls to Quinnipiac in Rematch Contest

Pittsburgh, Pa. - In game two of a non-conference series against Quinnipiac, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team dropped the rematch contest, 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.

The two Colonial goals were scored by two separate skaters while all four assists came from four additional players.


Quinnipiac senior forward Brittany Lyons scored the opening goal of the contest at 13:46 of the first period. Freshmen defenseman Kristen Tamberg hit fellow classmate Nicole Connery for the initial shot on goal. Lyons nailed home the rebound for her 14th goal of the season.

Robert Morris and Quinnipiac each went 0-1 on the power play in the opening frame with the Bobcats outshooting the Colonials 14-6.

Twelve minutes into the second period RMU tied the contest when sophomore forward Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) tipped in a shot from the crease 1:50 into Robert Morris' second power play chance of game.  Junior defenseman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) hit sophomore defenseman Kelsey Gunn (Smith Falls, Ontario / Niagara University) with a pass at the point. Gunn fired a shot on goal that allowed the Fergus tip. The goal is the third of the season and the assists mark the fourth and third for Pollock and Gunn.

Three minutes and twelve seconds later the Colonials took the lead, 2-1 after a goal from sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) on another RMU power play. This time the Colonials executed their third power play chance just 17 seconds into the power play. Senior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) hit junior defenseman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) at the point. St. Louis let the play develop then fired a pass to Vint in the crease for the second RMU score. The goal marks the 13th of the season for Vint and 35th of her career. The 35 goals sits Vint fourth all-time in RMU program history. The assist for Thomas moves her into sole possession of fourth overall in career assists with 42.

The third period proved to be the most successful for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats scored two goals in less than a minute to take the lead, 3-2. The final two goals for the Bobcats were both scored on the power play, the first of which Quinnipiac had a two-player advantage.

Eleven minutes into the third period, senior defenseman Regan Boulton scored the game-tying goal after back-to-back Colonial penalties. Senior defenseman Nicole Kosta hit junior forward Kelly Babstock with a pass in the left faceoff zone. Babstock sent a pass across the ice to Boulton who placed a shot in the top right corner of the cage.

Just 51 seconds into Quinnipiac's fourth power play opportunity, Connery scored the game-winning goal after passes from Boulton and freshman defenseman Cydney Roesler.

Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) registered a game-high 26 saves despite the loss. Thirteen of the 26 saves came in the first period.

The Colonials are now 10-8-2 on the season. RMU returns to College Hockey America (CHA) action next weekend as the Colonials travel to Rochester, N.Y. for a two-game series against RIT. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Sat., January 26 and 2:00 p.m. on Sun., January 27.
