NEC Opener Escapes RMU In Double-Overtime

Becky Schoenecker makes career-best 10 saves in NEC opener.

New Britain, Conn. / CCSU Soccer Field – Julie Lavoie took advantage of a failed clearance and scored in the 102nd minute to give Central Connecticut State a 2-1 win over Robert Morris University in the Northeast Conference women's soccer opener Friday night. The Colonials slip to 4-6-1 overall while the Blue Devils pick up their third win to go with seven losses.
 
RMU junior goalkeeper earned the start in net, making a career-best 10 saves in a losing effort. The Blue Devils outshot the Colonials, 24-11, in the game.
 
Sophomore Kristie Hamilton (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) tallied her second goal of the season to stake RMU to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Sophomore Lauren Sulkowski (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) earned the assist, her second of the season.
 
Neither team scored again in the second half until Tori Sousa's second goal of the year knotted things in the 52nd minute.
 
Robert Morris returns to North Athletic Complex for the first time since Sept. 4 when they host the Bryant Bulldogs in a 12:30 p.m. game. It's the first part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
