Moon Township, Pa. – Junior cornerback
Antwan Eddie (Homestead, Fla. / South Dade) of the
Robert Morris University football team once again claimed a Northeast Conference (NEC) weekly award as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Eddie was selected as NEC Defensive Co-Player of the Week after his efforts played a critical role in a key 24-3 victory over Bryant this past weekend.
This is Eddie's fourth honor of the season, but his first of the defensive variety, as he previously was honored three times in the league's special teams category. Eddie becomes only the second Colonial since 2001, joining his current assistant coach
Myles Russ, to win four NEC weekly awards in a single season.
Eddie also becomes the first Colonial ever to be honored in the league's special teams category and another category within the same year.
Eddie was one of the main factors in shutting down the Bryant offense and its star wide receiver Jordan Harris in the Colonials' victory over the Bulldogs this past Saturday. RMU held Bryant to just three points in the contest, the lowest point total in its Division I history, after the Bulldogs entered the game averaging over 28 points per outing in their last seven affairs. Eddie had a career-best two interceptions Saturday along with five tackles and a pass breakup.
Eddie's greatest contribution of the day may have been shutting down Harris. Harris, who was averaging nearly 100 yards per game before Saturday, is the NEC's all-time leader in receiving yards and had the second most among all active players at the FCS level entering Saturday. However, Eddie was frequently matched up against him, and limited the pro prospect to just two catches for 22 yards, the receiver's second-lowest yardage total in his last 27 games. Eddie's first pick came with Bryant driving in RMU territory while he returned the second one for 24 yards into Bulldog territory to help set up a RMU touchdown drive. Eddie was part of a defense that allowed a season-low 226 yards of total offense. His pass breakup came on a third-down play, which forced Bryant to punt.
While it was not as much of a factor against the Bulldogs as in previous weeks, Eddie continues to rank second nationally in punt return average (17.7 yards per return) at the FCS level.
Eddie becomes the 21st distinct Colonial in program history to be honored in the NEC's defensive player category. These 21 student-athletes have combined for 37 awards, including Eddie's honor.
Robert Morris will head back to the road this Saturday, Nov. 9, as it takes on Central Connecticut State.
