Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – December 28, 2013 - The
Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team, competing in the consolation game of the Three Rivers Classic, suffered yet another one-goal defeat this season. Facing off against Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon, the Colonials fell by a score of 3-2.
"It was a much better effort by our team tonight," said head coach
Derek Schooley. Schooley praised his team, "We played hard, we played extremely hard and we left it on the ice; that's all you can ask."
One day after turning in a 59-save performance, goaltender
Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) recorded 32 saves en route to earning a spot on the Three Rivers Classic All-Tournament team.
"I think Terry was solid all weekend and we are disappointed in the fact that he played well and we didn't come away with a [win]," said the head coach when asked about the netminder's performance.
A pair of third period goals from
David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronro Jr. Canadiens) and
Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) put Robert Morris (2-12-2, 2-5-2 AHA) within a goal of tying Bowling Green (9-9-4, 6-6-2 WCHA) in the final 24 seconds of the contest.
Bowling Green opened the scoring with just under five minutes remaining in the first period when Brett Mohler gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons added to their lead in the second frame with a power-play goal from Bryce Williamson as the score became 2-0 just three minutes into the period.
The deficit facing RMU grew to three goals just four minutes into the third period with a Bowling Green goal from Kevin Dufour that made the score 3-0.
It would take the Colonials until the 13:35 mark of the third period to get on the board, doing so with a power-play goal from Friedmann. The goal, coming on a two-man advantage, brought RMU to within a pair of goals with less than seven minutes remaining.
With Shafer pulled in the final minutes, Robert Morris would pull even closer with an extra-attacker goal provided by Lynch. Despite Lynch's goal with 24 seconds remaining, the Colonials were unable to tie the contest and fell by a score of 3-2.
Lynch's goal was his fifth in the past six games while Friedmann found the back of the net in each game of the Three Rivers Classic.
Robert Morris will embark on a road trip to the state of Connecticut that will see the Colonials play four games over a span of seven days. The trip kicks off with a game on Saturday, January 4 when RMU faces off against Sacred Heart at 7:05 p.m.
