Digby Helps RMU Take Down Dolphins, 11-6

Box Score

Jacksonville, Fla. – Senior Tyler Digby (Westminster, British Columbia / New Westminster) had one of the best offensive performances of his career as he notched a career-high four goals to lead the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory over Jacksonville Tuesday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.

Digby scored twice in the first quarter and twice in the fourth quarter to ensure that RMU never trailed in the road contest. It marked Digby's 13th career multi-point effort and his fourth multi-goal game.

While Digby was busy pouring in goals on the one end of the field, redshirt senior Charles Ruppert (Long Island, N.Y. / Massapequa) was doing his part on the other end. Ruppert made 14 saves against 20 shots on goal to register a .700 save percentage for the day and move to the verge of hitting 300 career saves. It was his sixth double-digit save effort in six games this season and the 16th of his career. Ruppert's outing Tuesday was more than enough to keep his streak intact of stopping more than half of the shots on goal he faces in every game this season.

True freshman midfielder Eric Rankel (Philadelphia, Pa. / Downingtown West) continued to help the Colonial cause as he tallied three points on a goal and two helpers. It was his sixth consecutive multi-point game to start his collegiate career and the fifth time this season he has collected at least three points.

Redshirt junior midfielder Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif. / Carlsbad) and senior midfielder Connor Martin (Maumee, Ohio / St. John's Jesuit) both notched two goals Tuesday to help RMU attain the victory. It was the sixth multi-goal game of Graves' career, and his third of 2013, and the first-ever such outing for Martin.

The game was relatively tight in the early going as RMU led 3-2 after one period of action after having scored the game's first two goals. Each team added a goal early in the second quarter, and RMU led, 4-3, with just under 13 minutes to play before halftime. From that point forward, the RMU defensive unit really clamped down as it allowed Jacksonville just three goals in the final 42:56 of the game.

Graves and Martin both scored in the second quarter to push RMU's lead to 6-3 before the Dolphins scored late in the half to cut the deficit at the intermission to two goals.

After each team scored once in the first half of the third quarter, Robert Morris broke the game open by scoring four consecutive times, spanning the third and fourth quarters, to take an 11-5 lead, a margin that would prove to be more than enough of a cushion for the Colonials.

RMU had advantages in shots, shots on goal, clearing percentage, extra-man opportunity percentage and also had fewer turnovers. In fact, the Colonials were a perfect 15-for-15 on clearing attempts Tuesday.

Senior attackman Jake Hayes (Calgary, Alberta / Central Memorial) had one goal and one assist to continue all of his significant streaks. With Tuesday's game, Hayes extended his career long point streak to 21 games and moved his goal streak and multi-point streaks to 13 games each. The effort was also Hayes' 26th career multi-point game.

Sophomore attackman Jacob Ruest (Cornwall, Ontario / The Hill Academy) scored in the second quarter to tally a point for the fourth time in the past five games.

True freshman James Rahe (Aldergrove, British Columbia / W.J. Mouat) tallied his second assist of the season on one of Digby's scores.

Robert Morris will look to catch its breath in the coming days after playing twice on the road in a span of four days. The Colonials will next play at home against Hobart Sunday, March 17, at 1:00 p.m.
