Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's tennis team opened up its 2012-13 Northeast Conference slate this past weekend with a 5-0 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn at the North Athletic Complex.
The Colonials, who were also set to square off with fellow NEC foes Saint Francis U. and Mount St. Mary's this past weekend, had those matches postponed due to inclement weather. RMU's match Tuesday against Coppin State at home was also postponed due to the weather.
The win over the Terriers gives RMU a 2-14 record on the 2012-13 campaign.
Doubles were not contested against St. Francis Brooklyn, and Robert Morris secured the victory thanks to wins at each of the first five singles flights.
At No. 1, junior Carolina Mourao Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) went three sets before knocking off Luda Lisovska, 3-6, 6-2 and 10-7.
However, RMU posted straight set sweeps at singles flights No. 2 through No. 5, 6-0 and 6-0.
At No. 2, freshman Marie-Sophie Heine (Wanze, Belgium) defeated Natasha Edwards, while senior Clarissa Chen (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Winnipeg Secondary) knocked off Dragana Dzigurski, at No. 3.
Freshman Dounia Zinbi (Halle, Belgium) posted a win over Jovana Bojinovic, while sophomore Kourtney Passero (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Central) defeated Akuila Edwards.
RMU returns to the court Saturday, March 23, with a Noon match against Pittsburgh at the North Athletic Complex. The Colonials will reschedule their matches with the SFU, the Mount and Coppin State, with dates and times to be determined.
