Grasonville, Md. / Prospect Bay C.C. - Blue skies and fair weather turned into wind and rain by the time the Robert Morris University men's golf team teed off for the first round of the Whiting Turner Towson Invitational Sunday afternoon in Grasonville, Md. The Colonials battled the elements to a team score of 325, 37 strokes over par on the par-72, 6,761-yard layout at Prospect Bay Country Club.
Freshman Matt Gurska (Hermitage, Pa. / Kennedy Catholic) managed to round the course in 76 strokes, a round of four-over par. He tallied nine consecutive pars on the back nine and also recorded a pair of birdies on the front. He sits in a tie of 21st place.
Senior Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) came home in 80 strokes while classmate Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) carded an opening round of 84. Sophomore Ryan Prokay (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) was one stroke back of him with an 85 while freshman Garrett Browning (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) had an opening round 87.
The event is slated for three rounds with one round each on Monday and Tuesday.
