Box Score
STORRS, Conn. – January 10, 2014 - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team took to the ice less than 24 hours after suffering a loss in the first game of the series against Connecticut. The two teams met again on Friday afternoon, and the result was polarizing for the Colonials, a 6-1 victory over the Huskies.
Robert Morris (5-13-2, 5-6-2 AHA) had five different skaters record a goal and seven other players earn a point in the victory. Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) responded after being pulled yesterday to post 25 saves while earning his fifth victory of the season.
RMU would open the scoring in the first period with a goal from Greg Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Amarillo Bulls). Gibson entered the offensive zone on the right wing and snapped a shot from the faceoff circle that beat Matt Grogan, the starting goaltender for Connecticut (10-7-2, 8-4-1 AHA).
A little over two minutes later, the Colonials would take a 2-0 lead with a goal from Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners). Blazek's first goal of the season came on a shot from the center point that found its way through traffic and behind Grogan.
Connecticut would respond before the end of the first period and cut the RMU advantage by making the score 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in the opening frame. Kyle Huson would pick up the goal for the Huskies, capitalizing on a rebound that was kicked out by Shafer.
Just 49 seconds after play resumed with the start of the second period, the Colonials regained their two-goal lead with a goal from Tyson Wilson (Brockville, Ontario / Brockville Braves) that made the score 3-1. Wilson fired a puck towards the cage from the left wing of the offensive zone that found its way past Grogan.
With less than five minutes remaining in the second, RMU increased its lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal. David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) collected a loose puck in the left wing faceoff circle and picked up his fifth goal of the season with a shot that sizzled past Grogan.
The Colonials would pick up a pair of goals in the final period of play, the first of which made the score 5-1 just 3:31 into the third. Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) fired a shot on net from the blueline that found its way past Robby Nichols, the new Connecticut goaltender who replace Grogan to start the third period.
Wydo would add a second goal in the period at the 11:36 mark when he collected a rebound and slid it behind Nichols. The goal capped off the scoring and made the final score 6-1.
RMU successfully killed off each of the two power plays for Connecticut in the victory. The unit has allowed just one power-play goal against this season in the five Colonial victories, going 17 for 18 on the kill.
With the conclusion of the team's Connecticut road trip that saw the Colonials play four games over seven days, Robert Morris collected six of a possible eight valuable points in the Atlantic Hockey standings.
Robert Morris will return to the friendly confines of 84 Lumber Arena next weekend to start a six-game homestand. The first opponent awaiting RMU will be American International and the two teams will kick off a two-game series on Friday, Jan. 17 with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
