Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Youngstown, Ohio – After never trailing in winning its first game of the day, the Robert Morris University softball team rallied from a deficit in the nightcap to earn a sweep of Youngstown State Wednesday night at a cool YSU Softball Complex.

RMU won the opener, 6-1, before coming from two runs down to take the second game, 6-4.

Senior Geena Badolato (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) led the Colonials from the circle while sophomore Haileigh Stocks (Jamison, Pa. / Central Bucks South) was the primary offensive threat and also contributed with her arm.

Badolato allowed seven hits and a lone run in 10 innings of work Wednesday while yielding just a single walk. She went the distance in the opener to earn the complete-game win. She then worked three innings of shutout relief in the nightcap to claim her third save of the season. Her save also marked her 100th appearance in the circle for RMU, becoming the fourth Colonial ever to hit the century mark in that category.

Stocks broke out at the plate Wednesday as she was 5-for-7 with a double and two RBI. She was 3-for-4 in the opener, her second three-hit game of the year, before going 2-for-3 in the nightcap. With the two multi-hit games, Stocks now has 10 in her career. She also earned the win in the nightcap by working into the fifth inning.

Senior Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) achieved a notable feat Wednesday as she broke the Robert Morris record for career assists. Show threw a runner out at first in the bottom of the third in the opener to tally the 368th assist of her career, topping the old mark of 367 that was held by Jessica Calderone. Show continued to build on her new record total and finished the day with 374.

After each side went in order in the first inning of the opener, RMU got on the board in the second. Stocks nailed a one-out double to the gap in right center before sophomore Kristen Gabelt (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) shot a ball through the left side to put runners at the corners. Senior Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) would plate the game's first run with a RBI groundout.

Badolato worked around a leadoff double in the second by retiring each of the next three batters.

After RMU went in order in the third, the Penguins would tie the game in the bottom half. A leadoff single, a sacrifice and a two-out single tied the game although Badolato would strand runners on the corners with a groundout.

Robert Morris would not let the game be tied for long as it grabbed the lead right back in the fourth. Junior Tess Apke (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) lined a single to left to start the frame before junior Samantha Santillo (Ellwood City, Pa. / Lincoln) was hit by a pitch. Stocks then bounced a single into left to load the bases. A passed ball and an error by the Penguins would then let a pair of runners cross the plate.

Badolato worked around a leadoff double for the second time in four frames in the fourth by getting two groundouts and a strikeout to preserve the two-run edge.

The Colonials would add to their lead in the fifth. Show led off with a sharp single to left before freshman Jordan Gurganus (Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) bunted for a hit. Sophomore Ashley Gerhart (Imperial, Pa.  / West Allegheny) worked a seven pitch walk to load the bases before Apke was hit by an offering to earn a painful RBI. Santillo then drove home a run on a fielder's choice before Stocks sent a liner over the third baseman's head and into left to score the third run of the frame.

Youngstown State was unable to take advantage of a Colonial miscue in the fifth.

Freshman Stacey Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) lined a single to left center with one down in the sixth and moved to second with two down, but a popup ended the inning.

The Penguins started the home half with an infield single, but a fly out and consecutive groundouts quickly closed the inning.

Santillo lined a single to center with two away in the seventh but would not advance.

Badolato faced the minimum in the bottom of the seventh as a groundout to third ended the contest.

The second affair proved more challenging for the Colonials, but they were still able to pull it out with a come-from-behind effort.

With two outs, an error by the Penguins extended the top of the first inning. Santillo then worked an eight-pitch walk to allow Stocks to drive an opposite-field single to right to score Apke.

Youngstown State took its first lead of the day in the bottom half as it used two singles and a hit batter to load the bases before a two-out double scored a pair of runs.

Junior Alexis Schwartzmiller (Carnegie, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) walked with two outs in the second, and Gerhart lined a single to right, but a strikeout ended the chance.

Stocks worked around a leadoff single in the second by retiring the next three batters.

After RMU went in order in the third, the Penguins doubled their lead in the home half with a solo homer.

Each team got one baserunner in the fourth inning, but neither side could add to their run total.

Robert Morris would tie the game and then some in the fifth. After an error started the inning, senior Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) then blasted a double to the fence in left to score Gerhart. With one out and Evans on third, the ball bounced in the dirt on a strikeout. Evans intently watched the catcher and then raced home as the Penguins tried to complete the putout at first. The veteran slid in safely to tie the game. Stocks got things restarted for RMU by lining a single to right center. Gabelt then took a walk before Siar came through with a towering drive to right that hit the fence and proved to be a two-run double.

A leadoff walk, a groundout and a one-out double brought the Penguins back within one. A two-out single would put runners on the corners, but Badolato got a groundout to keep the lead in Colonial hands.

A pair of Penguin errors allowed RMU to increase its advantage back to two runs in the sixth.

A leadoff walk and a one-out error put the tying runs on base for Youngstown State's three and four hitters, but Badolato was up to the task as she struck out both swinging on four pitches to keep her squad ahead.

Each team went in order in the final frame of the night as Badolato got two groundouts sandwiched around a soft lineout to close it out with minimal drama.

Siar's multi-RBI game was her second of the season and the 17th of her career.

RMU was playing for the fourth consecutive day Wednesday, the first time the Colonials have done that since March 10-13, 2009, and only the second such occurrence by a RMU team since 1999.

With consecutive non-conference, road doubleheaders in the books, Robert Morris will return to the diamond for a pair of Northeast Conference doubleheaders this weekend. The Colonials will host Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
