Colonials close road slate with setbacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University softball team fell behind early in both contests and dropped a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader to Wagner, 8-3 and 5-4, under partly sunny skies Saturday afternoon on Staten Island.

Freshman Jordan Gurganus (Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) led RMU on the day by going a combined 4-for-7 with two RBI, a sacrifice and a run scored. She notched her 12th and 13th multi-hit games of the year and now has hit safely in nine of her past 10 games. She also tallied her second multi-RBI outing in the past eight days in the opening contest.

Sophomore Kristen Gabelt (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) joined Gurganus in reaching base safely four times Saturday as she was 3-for-6 with a walk, two runs scored and a RBI. She tallied her fifth multi-hit game of the season and the 11th of her career.

Junior Tess Apke (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) added three hits and a RBI on the day. In doing so, she reached 50 hits as well as 25 RBI in a season for the first time in her career. Apke posted her 13th multi-hit game of the season, tied with Gurganus for the team high, an outing that doubled as the 32nd multi-hit game of her career.

An error and a sacrifice by Gurganus gave RMU a runner in scoring position with one away in the top of the first of the opener, but the Colonials could not convert.

Wagner struck first in the bottom half as it used a walk, a sacrifice and a two-out error to take the lead.

Senior Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) shot a single to center to start the second and moved to second base on a groundout but would not come all the way around.

Wagner did not take advantage of a one-out single in the bottom half.

Gabelt singled to left to start the third and was moved to second on a sacrifice by senior Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside).  With two outs, Gurganus lined a single to left to tie the game. Apke followed with a single to put two on base, but a strikeout ended the frame.

Wagner retook the lead in the bottom half as a single and two Colonial miscues brought home a run.

RMU was unable to put a runner on in the fourth, and the Seahawks broke it open in the home half by using four hits and an error to score three runs.

Sophomore Ashley Gerhart (Imperial, Pa.  / West Allegheny) singled to center with two outs in the fifth but would move no further. Wagner put two on in the home half but would not plate a run.

Show singled with two outs in the sixth, and an error put two aboard, but a strikeout stopped the potential rally. The Seahawks used five hits to score three runs in the bottom half, securing their advantage.

RMU tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as Gabelt and Evans started the frame with singles. After a groundout, Gurganus and Apke both delivered RBI singles, but they would be the last Colonials to reach base in the contest.

Show posted her fourth multi-hit game of the season and the 19th of her career in the opening game.

The nightcap would be a much tighter affair, and despite out-hitting Wagner, the Colonials would again come out on the short end.

RMU had a chance to strike first in the second game as Gurganus and Apke singled with two outs in the first inning. Gabelt followed by working an eight-pitch walk to load the bases, but a groundout ended the chance.

Wagner dented the scoreboard first in the bottom half as a walk, a groundout advancing the runner and a single to right brought home a run.

Junior Alexis Schwartzmiller (Carnegie, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) nailed a single to center to start the second. Sophomore Lauren Hackett (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) then put down a sacrifice bunt but also ended up reaching base via error. However, the next three Colonials could not move the runners along any further.

The Seahawks added a run with a solo homer to left center in the home half.

After Robert Morris went in order in the third, Wagner used a walk, a sacrifice, two hits and an error to score two runs to double its lead.

RMU fought back in the fourth as sophomore Haileigh Stocks (Jamison, Pa. / Central Bucks South) started the frame by nailing a full count pitch into the left center gap for a double. Schwartzmiller then singled up the middle to put runners on the corners before Hackett drove an opposite-field double to the fence in right center to score both runners. With one out, Gerhart singled to center, and Hackett came around to score on the play. A well-struck liner by Show would then unfortunately turn into an inning-ending double play.

After RMU worked around a hit batter in the bottom of the fourth, the Colonials would tie the game in the fifth. Gurganus started it with a bunt single and later moved to third on an error. Gabelt would deliver a game-tying single. Stocks then walked to put a pair of runners on, but consecutive fly balls ended the inning.

Wagner would score what proved to be the winning run with a line drive solo homer to left with one out in the fifth.

RMU could not produce a runner in the sixth and then worked around a pair of singles in the bottom half.

A one-out error by the hosts gave the Colonials some life in the seventh, but a lineout to right that held up long enough to be caught ended RMU's chance at a comeback.

Schwartzmiller tallied her sixth career multi-hit outing in the nightcap while Hackett notched her sixth ever multi-RBI performance.

Saturday's games were RMU's final road contests of the year. Robert Morris is scheduled to close its season by hosting Fairleigh Dickinson in a NEC doubleheader Sunday, May 4.
