Moon Township, Pa. – Senior defensive back
Antwan Eddie of the
Robert Morris University football team was selected as a Preseason All-American by
The Sports Network in a recent announcement by the organization.
Eddie claimed the lone punt returner slot on the Second Team Preseason All-America squad after having a record-breaking junior campaign in 2013.
Eddie, a two-year starter at cornerback for the Colonials, returned punts for the first time in his collegiate career a year ago and certainly made the most of his opportunity. He returned 27 punts for a single-season school record 405 yards and a touchdown. He led the league and ranked third nationally in punt returns, averaging 15.0 yards per chance. Eddie was honored in the Northeast Conference's weekly special teams category three different times in 2013 and is the only player in the league to win at least three such honors in a single season since 2009. In addition to bringing back an 88-yard touchdown at VMI, the longest punt return in school history, he also brought back four punts for 96 yards in the home opener and six punts for 99 yards at Wagner. Eddie registered at least one return of 10 yards in eight of the nine games in which he attempted a punt return.
Eddie, who was also an All-NEC selection as a defensive back last year, became the first Colonial in school history to get an All-American award for a performance on special teams when he was bestowed that honor by
The Sports Network at the end of the 2013 campaign.
Eddie was one of two RMU football student-athletes to bring home All-America honors last season as offensive lineman
A.J. Dalton also won hardware. Dalton signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions in May and is currently on the team's active roster.
Robert Morris will open the 2014 season with the first Thursday night home game in program history. The Colonials will welcome perennial power Eastern Kentucky Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7:00 p.m.
