Ann Arbor, Mich. – Robert Morris men's hockey used a 3-goal first period and 34 saves by
Dalton Izyk to shut out tenth-ranked Michigan 4-0 Saturday at Yost Ice Arena for the first time since January 16, 2009.
Senior forward
Brandon Denham opened the scoring just 2:40 into the game. Denham took the puck from Michigan, passed to
David Friedmann and drove to the net before taking the feed from Friedmann and burying the puck past Zach Nagelvoort.
In similar fashion,
Daniel Leavens stripped a puck away from Michigan and put it on the stick of
Greg Gibson. Leavens skated through the right circle towards the net, taking the pass from Gibson and wristing it over the shoulder of Nagelvoort.
With less than a minute remaining in the first,
Greg Gibson wins a faceoff in the Michigan end.
Zac Lynch hands the puck off to
Tyson Wilson who drives up the left side, flipping a backhander past Nagelvoort to extend the Colonials lead to 3-0 at the end of the first period. Nagelvoort was replaced in net by Steve Racine to start the second period.
Robert Morris kept the pedal down offensively early in the second. Leavens batted the puck towards the front of the net and Gibson nearly knocked it home. The rebound caromed out and Leavens once again chipped it between the circles, where this time Lynch was there to put the puck past Racine to make it a 4-0 RMU lead.
The Colonials didn't let their advantage slip away as the game went on, playing solid defense throughout the contest. RMU was perfect on the penalty kill, holding Michigan to 0-6 on the night.
Dalton Izyk was outstanding in net, holding Michigan's potent offense off the board with 34 saves. The shutout was the fifth of Izyk's career and ties him with Eric Levine as RMU's all-time career shutouts leader. The 34 saves pushed the junior goaltender over the 1,000 save mark for his career.
The 4-0 win marks the first time the Colonials have beaten a top 10 team since a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Miami on December 29, 2012 at CONSOL Energy Center in the championship game of the Three Rivers Classic tournament.
Gibson (6 G, 7A) maintains the team points lead with 13 after registering back-to-back 5-point weekends, this time with 5 assists in two games.
Robert Morris is back home next weekend, November 6-7 as Atlantic Hockey conference play continues against American International. For tickets visit
