RMU Takes Home Ice for Matchup with Merrimack

The Colonials compete with first-year program Merrimack in home opener

Pittsburgh, Pa. – After back-to-back two-game weekend series on the road, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team opens its home slate with first-year program Merrimack on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 10 at 3:05 p.m. at 84 Lumber Arena.

Head coach Paul Colontino's main message to his Colonials (0-3-1) at the end of Thursday's practice, in preparation for playing on home ice for the first time this season, was to stay rested, relaxed and focused, goals that are not always easily remembered nor achieved while on the road. The young squad, however, has showed signs of progress in its first two weekends of action and hopes to trend upward when the Warriors (0-2-0) of Merrimack roll into town. A key to Robert Morris' success this weekend will be to limit its penalties, as Merrimack ranks No. 1 in the nation in power play percentage (5-for-9; .556).

Robert Morris versus Merrimack
Robert Morris and Merrimack face off for the first time in program history this weekend.

A Fresh Start
After just two weekends of collegiate action, the 2015-16 freshman class has made an immediate impact on this year's Colonials squad. Freshman Amber Rennie leads the team in goals (3) and shot percentage (.429). She is tied with fellow rookie Kirsten Welsh for second on the team in points (3). Welsh's three points come from three assists in four games played, a team-best shared with redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard. Freshman goaltender Lauren Bailey has appeared in two games and made her first start in the second of two games at Colgate last weekend.

Block Party
Two Colonials rank in the top five nationally in blocked shots. Junior defenseman Mikaela Lowater ranks first with 12 blocks, and Kirsten Welsh sits in a tie for second with 12. As a team, RMU leads all Division I women's hockey teams in blocked shots (74). That's an average 18.5 stops per game.

Leading the Way
RMU ranks in the top 10 in Division I women's hockey in shots on goal (144) and sits fourth in the nation in faceoffs won (104).

100 Club
Senior captain and Pittsburgh native Ashley Vesci played in her 100th career game in an RMU uniform on Oct. 3, 2015 at Colgate.
