RMU Concludes Non-Conference Slate at No. 4 Quinnipiac

RMU takes on second nationally ranked opponent of the season

Pittsburgh, Pa.The first road trip of 2016 takes the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to No. 4 Quinnipiac for a two-game series scheduled for Friday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
 
This concludes the non-conference portion of the 2015-16 schedule for RMU.
 
The Colonials (12-6-4) are riding a five-game unbeaten streak into the second of two consecutive non-conference series. Robert Morris showed no evidence of rust on their game after returning from the holiday break, as they cruised past Providence by margins of 6-1 and 4-1. They take on a top-ranked Bobcats (16-1-3) squad following a bye week.
 
No. 4 Quinnipiac (17-1-4) is riding a fifteen-game unbeaten streak, having won 11 of their last 13. The squad has not lost since dropping a 4-3 decision to Yale on Oct. 31. The Bobcats boast the No. 2 scoring defense in the nation, averaging 0.91 goals per game. Quinnipiac's power play and penalty kill rank ninth and fourth, respectively, for a combined special teams ranking of No. 6.

Robert Morris versus Quinnipiac
The Colonials trail in the all-time series with the Bobcats, 1-10-1. In 2014, RMU upset a No. 10-ranked Quinnipiac team, 5-1, in Hamden, Conn. Current junior Rikki Meilleur scored a goal, and redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard and senior Ashley Vesci added assists in the win. RMU is 1-2-1 in its last four meetings with QU. Two of the last four games between the programs have gone into overtime.

Robert Morris is riding a current five-game unbeaten streak into the second of two consecutive non-conference series. The Colonials have scored three or more goals in seven of their last eight games and have recorded one or more power-play tallies in 11 of their last 12 outings, including the last five straight.
 
Tough Test
Quinnipiac is the second nationally ranked opponent on the Colonials' 2015-16 schedule. To open the season, RMU visited a No. 9-ranked Bemidji State team. Robert Morris dropped the first game and tied the second.
 
Hot Streaks
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard leads RMU in goals, assists and points (11-18-29) and is riding a seven-game point streak. Junior Maeve Garvey has posted a point in her last five games.
 
Among the Ranks
RMU ranks among the top five in NCAA DI women's hockey in power-play goals (27; 2nd), power-play assists (53; 2nd), penalty kills (90; 1st), blocked shots (334; t-2nd) and blocked shots per game (15.18; t-3rd). RMU boasts a top-10 scoring offense (eighth), power play (third), penalty kill (seventh) and combined special teams (fifth).
 
Freshman Phenoms
Freshman Kirsten Welsh is tied for eighth in the nation in power-play goals (four). Fellow classmate Sarah Quaranta is tied for eighth among rookies in point per game (0.77).
