Grasonville, Md. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team shot a 302 this afternoon at Towson Spring Invitational, placing the Colonials in a tie for 11th place out of 22 teams after the tournament's opening round.
Robert Morris, deadlocked with William & Mary, sits three strokes outside the top six with its 14-over opening round performance. Fairleigh Dickinson leads the field after shooting a one-under 287, followed by Elon (288, E), Towson (289, +1), Bethune-Cookman (291, +3), and Pennsylvania (297, +9). Fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) foes Bryant and Sacred Heart currently reside in a tie for seventh and a tie for 16th, respectively.
Playing at Prospect Bay Country Club, a 6,530-yard par 72 course, the Colonials were led by Max Palmer who shot a one-over 73 that puts him in a tie for 19th on the leaderboard. Palmer rattled off four birdies on the day and finished the back nine at one-under to pace RMU.
David Szymanski followed him up with a two-over 74, opening the front nine with a one-under thanks to two birdies and six pars. Mike McMorrow and Grant Schmaker shot respective scores of 77 (+5) and 78 (+6), while Daniel Franco Saad carded an 82 (+10). Brett Pompeani competed as an individual, scoring an 86 (+14) through the invitational's first 18 holes.
Syzmanski is tied for seventh in par four scoring at one-under, while Palmer's four birdies are tied for the eighth most in the first round.
Robert Morris concludes play at the Towson Spring Invitational tomorrow morning, beginning with an 8:00 a.m. tee time.
