Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team entered two groups into its home invitational and currently have those teams sitting in second and a tie for fourth after the opening round of the RMU Colonial Classic at the Montour Heights Country Club this afternoon.
Playing at the 6,634-yard, par-72 course in Moon Township, Robert Morris' top team shot a 312 (+24), seven strokes off St. Bonaventure's lead of 305 (+17). The second Colonial group carded a 319 (+31) and is deadlocked with Saint Francis U in fourth, with Iona's 316 (+28) currently sitting in third. Rounding out the field is Youngstown State (320, +32), Humber (324, +36), Niagara (327, +39), and Canisius (344, +56).
Max Palmer and David Szymanski led RMU on the day after each shooting a three-over 75. Palmer fired a pair of birdies on the front nine to card a 36 and totaled 11 pars on the afternoon, while Szymanski tied for the team lead with three birdies – two of which came on the back nine. The duo currently is three strokes off the lead, which is held by St. Bonaventure's Nolan Ditcher with an even-par 72.
Also ranking in the top 10 today for the Colonials is Michael McMorrow, who fired a six-over 78. Grant Schumaker and Kyle Grube are in a tie for 11th after tallying a seven-over 79, followed by Bryce Gorrell with an 80 (+8), Brett Pompeani at 81 (+9), and Daniel Franco Saad with an 82 (+10). Rounding out the RMU contingent is Ethan Sawyer and Alex Schreckengost, who respectively carded scores of 84 (+12) and 89 (+17).
Robert Morris concludes the Colonial Classic tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. start.
