Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team currently sits in third after shooting a 19-over 307 on the first day of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the LPGA International Hills Course.
Leading after the opening round is Bryant (296, +8), followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (305, +17). Trailing Robert Morris is Central Connecticut (308, +20), LIU Brooklyn (312, +24), Saint Francis U (314, +26), Wagner (314, +26), Sacred Heart (317, +29), and St. Francis Brooklyn (332, +44).
Max Palmer and Grant Schumaker paced the Colonials over the first 18 holes, each shooting a three-over 75 to rank eighth. Palmer tallied three birdies over a four-hole stretch on the back nine along with 10 pars. Schumaker rallied to birdie 12, 14, and 16 after sitting at five-over through 11 holes. A bogey on 17 pulled would pull him into a tie with his freshman teammate.
Michael McMorrow posted a six-over 78 and sits in tie for 17th. McMorrow fired an even-par 36 over the front nine and registered a par on each hole, ultimately leading the team with 13 pars on the day.
Daniel Franco Saad and Bryce Gorrell rounded out the Colonial contingent by each firing a seven-over 79, putting them in a tie for 22nd individually. Saad posted three birdies on holes three, 11, and 13, and tallied seven pars, while Gorrell birdied a pair of par fives on the front nine and added eight pars to his round.
Four players shot under par in the opening round, led by McKinley Slade of Bryant, who shot a three-under 69.
Robert Morris will tee off in the final flight of the second round at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
