Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team concluded the 2016-17 season with a third place finish at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the LPGA International Hills Course.
Robert Morris finished with a three-day score of 913 (+49) after carding a 17-over 305 over the final 18 holes. Bryant claimed the title with a 54-hole mark of 884 (+20), followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (910, +46). Wagner finished fourth (921, +57), then Central Connecticut (925, +61), LIU Brooklyn (936, +72), Sacred Heart (940, +76), Saint Francis U (940, +76), and St. Francis Brooklyn (985, +121).
For the second straight season, Daniel Franco Saad was the Colonials' top finisher as an even-par 72 this afternoon placed the sophomore fifth. Franco Saad, who carded a total score of six-over 222, tallied 12 pars and three birdies –two of latter coming on the back nine. Sitting at two-over with four holes remaining, the sophomore buried a chip-in on the par-three 15th and followed that up with another birdie on the 567-yard, par five 16th. He closed the round by posting back-to-back pars, securing his sixth round of below or even par this season.
Bryce Gorrell fired a two-over 74 this afternoon and finished 16th with a three-day score of 230 (+14). Gorrell matched Franco Saad's par total of 12, while adding birdies on holes two and 11. The sophomore posted a 36 on the back nine thanks to six consecutive pars, improving from previous marks of 40 and 41 in rounds one and two.
Michael McMorrow registered a seven-over 79 in his final round at RMU. The senior, who finished 30th with a three-day score of 239 (+23), opened the front nine with a 37 after sandwiching a bogey between eight pars.
Max Palmer closed his freshman season with an eight-over 80, placing in a tie for 13th overall at 229 (+13). Grant Schumaker also carded an 80 on the afternoon and tied for 22nd with a mark of 234 (+18).
Anton Frondelius of Wagner claimed medalist honors as his two-under 70 this afternoon allowed him to finish with a three-day score of 215 (-1), two strokes ahead of Bryant's Ryan Toombs at 271 (+1).
This is the ninth consecutive season in which Robert Morris has finished in the top half of the leaderboard at the NEC Championships.
Robert Morris is set to lose just one senior (McMorrow) to graduation.
