RMU AD Craig Coleman To Step Down

Coleman plans to return to medicine after 13 years leading RMU's athletic department

Moon Township, Pa. – Craig Coleman, director of athletics at Robert Morris University, will step down after 13 years on the job, the university announced today. His resignation is effective December 7, 2018.

Coleman, who is also the head coach for the RMU softball team, was a practicing psychiatrist before being tapped to succeed the late Susan Hofacre in 2005. He has been the Colonials head softball coach since 1991, and during that time the team has won eight regular season titles and six Northeast Conference tournament titles.

Prior to being hired as RMU's director of athletics, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1988 to 2005. He served as the medical director of several inpatient units, residential treatment facilities, and partial hospital programs at UPMC.

"After a 13-year hiatus, I've decided to return to my previous career in medicine," said Coleman. "I'm extremely grateful to the university for the opportunity to have served the athletic department as athletic director and coach."

During Coleman's tenure as RMU athletics director, the university's NCAA Division I sports programs have claimed a total of 24 regular-season championships and earned 16 automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament.

Student-athletes at RMU also have excelled in the classroom. In his first year as director of athletics in 2005-06, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Team, the most in school history. RMU also earned the NEC Institutional Academic Award in both 2012 and 2014.

The university will conduct a search for Coleman's successor. In the meantime, Senior Associate Athletics Director Marty Galosi will step in as acting director of athletics. Assistant Softball Coach Jexx Verner has been named interim head coach of the softball program.
