Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – St. Francis Brooklyn connected for 15 three-pointers, including 10 in the first half, to send the
Robert Morris University men's basketball to its fourth consecutive defeat, 77-65, Thursday night at the Pope P.E. Center.
The Terriers never trailed in the contest, as Rasheem Dunn opened the scoring with a three-pointer at the 19:40 mark. Each of the first five field goals of the game came from beyond the arc as SFC (11-14, 8-5 NEC) built a 15-11 advantage.
Freshman forward
Koby Thomas pulled the Colonials to within 17-13 with 11:10 left in the first half after a pair of free throws, but St. Francis Brooklyn used a 13-4 surge to grab a 30-17 advantage. Misa Cosic, Josh Nicholas and Glenn Sanabria each hit a three-pointer during the run.
The Terriers grabbed their biggest lead with 1:23 to go in the first half, 40-23, after a layup from Darelle Porter. St. Francis Brooklyn shot 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from deep in the first 20 minutes of action in grabbing a 43-27 lead at the break.
Robert Morris (13-13, 7-6 NEC) scored the first four points of the second half, as sophomore guard
Dachon Burke scored all four points, including an and one courtesy of a dunk and free throw after a foul by Jagos Lasic.
Sanabria answered for the Terriers, connecting from deep to give St. Francis Brooklyn a 46-31 advantage.
RMU was able to whittle its deficit to 10 on four different occasions in the second half, but each time St. Francis Brooklyn would stem the tide. Junior guard
Matty McConnell converted a three-point play with 3:29 to go that helped the Colonials close to within 68-60, and on the next possession for the Terriers, Sanabria turned it over.
Burke followed by missing a jumper and after an empty possession by SFC, freshman guard
Leondre Washington missed a layup. Porter would seal the win for the Terriers with a layup and then a three-pointer with 1:02 left that gave St. Francis Brooklyn a 73-62 lead.
The only member of the Colonials to score in double figures was Burke, who established a career high with 27 points while grabbing eight rebounds and recording a block and two steals. He shot 11-for-19 from the floor and 5-for-6 at the free-throw line.
In his first career start, freshman forward
Charles Bain finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward
Chris Coalmon notched nine points, three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Jalen Jordan led St. Francis Brooklyn with 21 points, Dunn added 16 and Sanabria finished with 15 points and four assists. Combined, the trio finished with 10 three-pointers as the Terriers finished 15-for-33 (45.5%) from beyond the arc.
Robert Morris outscored SFC, 40-16, in points in the paint, and also held a 16-13 edge in points off turnovers but mustered just a 2-for-19 (10.5%) performance from deep.
The Colonials conclude their annual swing through Brooklyn, N.Y., Saturday, Feb. 10, with a 4:30 p.m. tip against LIU Brooklyn and the Steinberg Wellness Center.
