Blackbirds Fly Away with Saturday Set

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University softball lost a set of Northeast Conference contests at LIU Brooklyn Saturday afternoon. The Blackbirds won both games convincingly, 12-3 in the opener and 10-3 in the night cap, to improve to 15-20 overall and 4-3 in the league. RMU, which had won four of five games heading into the series, slips to 10-24 and 1-4 in the NEC.

Kaitlyn Clark led the Colonials on offense, going 3-of-4 while blasting her first career home run in the opening game. She added a double and two runs batted in on the afternoon. Taylor Bartlow was 3-of-5 as she poked a trio of singles into right center field in the night cap. Katie Isenberg, Briana Bunner and Kristen Pray each had two hits. Isenberg collected her second home run in the last four games and topped the team with four RBIs Saturday.

After two scoreless innings in the opener, Clark opened the third inning with a shot over the left field fence to put the Colonials on top. Pray singled and would later score, along with Abrielle McCartney, when Isenberg came through with a two out single to left field.

The Blackbirds got two back in the third inning, chasing RMU starter Kaitlin Ellzy from the circle as she walked five batters in 2.1 innings. Ryleigh Bermea doubled in two of the hosts' five runs in the fourth to put LIU on top for good. Bermea accounted for three more scores in the fifth with a home run that invoked the mercy rule, 12-3.

LIU Brooklyn picked up right where they left on in game two. They tallied four runs in the first, three coming on a double by Nereyda Gutierrez. Isenberg cut the margin to 4-2 when her second homer of the season drove in McCartney. Bartlow followed with the first of her three singles and eventually scored when Clark laced a double to left center.

The Blackbirds loaded the bases in the fourth and pushed their margin to 8-3 when back-to-back singles by Evie Claussell and Alina Castillo each accounted for two runs. LIU added single runs in the fourth and sixth to sweep the series with a 10-3 final.

The Colonials continue NEC play Sunday, April 15, as they take on Sacred Heart in a doubleheader slated to start at Noon in Fairfield, Conn.
