Moon Township, Pa. – Artemis Spanou, 2014 alumna of the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, has signed a professional contract with CMB Cargo UNI Gyor of Hungary's Nemzeti Bajnokság I/A.

Spanou moves onto Hungary's top league after playing last season with CCC Polkowice of Poland's Basket Liga Kobiet. The former Robert Morris great helped lead the team to its second championship in Poland's top league, tallying a team-high 15 points in a 59-46 victory over Artego Bydgoszcz. She averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 rebounds over 46 contests with CCC Polkowice, as the team navigated through both its domestic league and the EuroLeague – which consists of the best teams in Europe.

"Artemis grew so much during her four years in our program," said RMU head coach Charlie Buscaglia. "It was very rewarding to see her develop not only as a player, but also as a person. Since she has graduated, her pro career really should be recognized for not only the high-level organization she plays for, but also for how much she has served her team while with them. She's played in many championship games at the top divisions for a reason."

CMB Cargo UNI Gyor finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 13-7 overall record and has placed in the top three of the league standings six of the last eight seasons. In the postseason, the team has made it to the semifinals in back-to-back seasons and appeared in the 2016 championship series.

Spanou's name can be found at or near the top of every statistical category in the program record book. She owns the school standard in points (2,124), field goals made (743), free throws made (505), rebounds (1,563), and rebounding average (12.6), while sharing second place in games started (122) and third in blocked shots (114). A two-time NEC Player of the Year and the 2014 NEC Tournament MVP, Spanou is one of two Colonials to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, and 100 steals in their career.

Since graduating from RMU, Spanou has embarked on a successful professional career that features four different teams in the top Turkish, Spanish, and Polish leagues, along with the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is one 20 former Colonials to play in the pro ranks, a list that includes former teammates such as Lou Mataly (2012-16), Rebeca Navarro (2013-17), Ashley Ravelli (2012-16), Kristine Silaraja (2009-11), and Anna Niki Stamolamprou (2013-17) who are among the current RMU contingent currently active.

"Artemis is a true professional with an exceptional work ethic to be the best leader she can be," added Buscaglia. "We are truly blessed to be able to root her team on, and have the joy of seeing her do what she loves so much."

Robert Morris concluded the 2017-18 campaign with its eighth postseason appearance since 2007 as it competed in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Colonials captured a share of their sixth NEC regular-season championship and eclipsed the 20-win mark for the 11th time in program history, finishing with a school-record 25 victories.
