Colonials Tripped Up in Steel City Derby at Duquesne

Owen Pearce opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but the host Dukes would score four unanswered to earn the win

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team fell to Duquesne, 4-1, this evening in non-conference play from Rooney Field.

After earning its first victory this past Saturday, Robert Morris (1-6-1, 0-0-0 NEC) stumbled in its second straight game against an Atlantic-10 opponent. Duquesne (2-3-1, 0-0-0 A-10) owned the possession edge and generated 21 shots to the Colonials' six.

Despite that possession edge for the Dukes, it was RMU who would strike first in the 17th minute. The visitors created a rush down the left flank with Matt Cillo carrying the ball towards the 18. He then dumped it back to Owen Pearce, who took one dribble before unleashing a low liner that tucked inside the near post for his second goal of the season.

The Colonials nearly doubled their lead in the 35th minute. After a Duquesne corner kick, Kai Olguin gathered the ball on the counter and found Cristian Palermo with a perfect through ball. Palermo's first touch was a bit heavy, but he quickly regathered himself and unleashed a strike that was gloved by Domenic Nascimben.

The hosts found an equalizer three minutes later as Manel Busquets held the ball up in the box before leaving it off to Rob Dymond.

In the 48th minute, Noah Menta buried the rebound of a Luke Kelley blocked shot to give the Dukes a 2-1 lead. Manel Busquets made it a two-goal difference in the 62nd minute, heading in his initial shot that struck the crossbar. Dymond added his second in the 64th minute on a header.

Fondi made three saves between the posts.

Robert Morris concludes non-conference play this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m. when it travels to Howard.
