Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team remains in first place after the second round of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, but shares the position with Sacred Heart after the Colonials posted a 13-over 301 on the afternoon.
Robert Morris's 301 was tied for the second-best score of the day, but Sacred Heart made up a two-stroke gap with an 11-over 299. Both teams have totaled 601 (+25) through 36 holes, owning an eight-stroke advantage over third-place Bryant (609, +33). Saint Francis U (617, +41), Fairleigh Dickinson (621, +45), Mount St. Mary's (622, +46), LIU Brooklyn (630, +54), St. Francis Brooklyn (649, +73), and Wagner (652, +76) round out the field.
RESULTS: 2019 NEC Championships Second Round
Through two days, RMU shares the lead in par-five scoring (5.00, E) with Sacred Heart and ranks second in par-four scoring (4.22, +22). The Colonials have made 111 pars, six more than the Pioneers.
Kyle Grube fired a one-over 73 to lead RMU on the second 18. Grube came out firing on all cylinders, sinking a pair of birdies to open the round. The junior tallied a round-high six birdies in all, three each on the front and back nines. He added seven pars and will enter tomorrow's final round tied for fourth overall at four-over 148, four strokes off the lead.
Max Palmer posted a two-over 74 and will begin tomorrow tied for second at three-over 147. Palmer collected back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, coupling them with 14 pars. The junior paces the field in pars through two rounds with 29, and ranks second in par-four scoring at 4.00.
Head coach Jerry Stone called on Bryce Gorrell to play today's second round as a substitute, and the senior fired the Colonials' third-lowest score at a four-over 76. Gorrell collected birdies on the fifth, ninth, and 14th holes, tallied nine pars, and finished the front nine at even par.
Chase Miller and Daniel Franco Saad both registered a six-over 78. Miller sank back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes, while Franco Saad collected birdies at the sixth and 16th flags.
RMU will enter tomorrow's final round with a share of the lead for the first time since 2015, the last year that the Colonials have captured the title. Gorrell is slated to lead things off tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. tee time.
