Castro Collects Horizon League Freshman of the Week

The Argentinian forward averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks over the weekend

Moon Township, Pa.Sol Castro, a freshman forward on the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, has been tabbed by the Horizon League as its Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon in a press release.

Castro is the first RMU player to receive a Horizon League weekly award this season and the 15th different freshman in program history to garner a conference weekly award. The last to do was current junior guard Esther Castedo, who was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week on Jan. 16, 2019.

The Rio Colorado, Argentina product had her best weekend as a collegian against Wright State, helping lead the Colonials to a pair of victories. Castro averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.0 assists over the two contests, while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. She posted the first double-double of her RMU career last Friday, setting career highs in points (23) on 8-of-14 shooting and rebounds (11) in a 50-43 win. The following day, Castro scored 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting, adding five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks as the Colonials came back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Raiders, 68-65.

Castro became the first RMU freshman since teammate Honoka Ikematsu to score 20 or more points in consecutive contests. Ikematsu accomplished this back in the 2017-18 season, netting 23 on Dec. 29 at Fairleigh Dickinson before scoring a career-best 25 two days later at Sacred Heart.

The six-foot-one forward leads the Colonials in scoring (9.2), field goal percentage (.437), steals (1.0), blocks (0.4), and minutes played (28.0), and ranks second in rebounding (4.2). She has started all 10 games this season, and has reached double figures in scoring on four occasions – previously doing so on Dec. 19, 2020 at Milwaukee (10) and Jan. 2, 2021 against IUPUI (14).

RMU remains at the friendly confines of the UPMC Events Center this weekend as it hosts I-76 rival Youngstown State for a pair of games on Jan. 29-30. Friday's tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., while Saturday features a 5:00 p.m. start. Both games can be seen on ESPN+.
