Senior leads circuit in field goal percentage entering 2022 Horizon League Tournament

Moon Township, Pa. – In a vote of Horizon League head coaches, senior forward Kahliel Spear of the RMU men's basketball team was named to the 2022 #HLMBB Third Team Monday. It marks the first postseason honor for Spear as well as the first for an RMU student-athlete since the Colonials joined the Horizon League in June of 2020.

Spear, a native of The Colony, Texas, is one of two Colonials to start each of RMU's 30 games during the 2021-22 season and leads the squad in both scoring (14.5 points per game) and rebounding (7.6 rebounds per game). He enters the 2022 Keeps Horizon League Tournament leading the league in field goal percentage at 54 percent (175-for-324) and also ranks fourth in the circuit in rebounding, sixth in blocks (1.0 per game) and 10th in scoring.

Named to the 2022 Horizon League All-Academic Team as well as earning a spot on the 2021-22 Academic All-District® Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Spear is an economics major who has compiled a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.92. He scored in double figures in each of RMU's nine games during the month of February, producing averages of 17.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest while converting 56.5 percent (61-for-108) of his attempts from the field.

Three times during the month of February Spear eclipsed the 20-point plateau, including a career-high 27 points in a 73-68 victory @ Youngstown State (2/13/22). Overall during the 2021-22 campaign, Spear leads the Colonials in double-figure scoring contests (25), 20-point scoring games (8) and double-doubles (7). He is also RMU's active leader in both consecutive games played (48) and starting assignments (35).

Led by RMU Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole, who is in his 12th season, the Colonials enter the 2022 Keeps Horizon League Tournament as the No. 10 seed. RMU will travel to No. 7 seed Youngstown State Tuesday, March 1, for a 7:00 p.m. tip at the Beeghly Center. The two programs split the 2021-22 season series, with each team winning on the other's home court. The all-time series between RMU and YSU is tied, 12-12.
