Penn State Defeats Robert Morris 68-58 in Coaches vs. Cancer Exhibition Game

Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris and Penn State squared off in an exhibition game to support the American Cancer Society as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program on Friday night at the UPMC Events Center. The Nittany Lions won the contest 68-58.

Markeese Hastings recorded a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. TJ Wainwright scored a team-high 15 points and Josh Corbin added 13 points for the Colonials.

Qudus Wahab had a 15 point/10 rebound double-double for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State jumped out to an early 11-2 lead but RMU kept it a two-possession game and used an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to one point at 31-30 at the 2:03 mark of the 1st half. PSU closed out the half scoring the final five points to take a 35-30 lead into halftime. 

With the Nittany Lions ahead 41-35, the Colonials were able to get within one point of tying the contest at 16:22 of the 2nd half on Hastings' layup which made the score 44-43. However, PSU answered with a 16-7 run to go ahead by 12 at 60-48 at 7:34. 

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Chris Ford and Wainwright along with a Hastings layup capped an 8-1 run to close the gap at 61-56 at the under-4 media time out. However, RMU only converted a pair of field goals the rest of the way.

"First of all, a big thank you to Coach Mike Rhoades and Penn State for coming to the UPMC Events Center for tonight's game," said head coach Andrew Toole. "This was a great way to honor Matt and continue to raise money and the awareness of Coaches vs. Cancer."

In March of 2023, RMU Director of Basketball Operations Matthew Sweet was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer. Sweet has completed four rounds of chemo and immunotherapy as well as one round of chemotherapy and radiation. Over the next year, Sweet will continue immunotherapy treatments.

Penn State played in support of mindfulness coach Alex Peavey and the Peavey Project. Peavey has endured a five-year battle with two stage-four cancers. Peavey has been given days, weeks and months to live throughout his battle, but has continued to persevere and fight.

Up next is the Colonials' season opener against Xavier on Nov. 6. The Musketeers are coming off a 27-win season and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals.
