RMU Drops First Game of Series to RIT

Arnold scores first career goal with multipoint effort

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team fell to RIT in the first game of the series, 3-7. The Colonials are now 6-7-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the CHA. RIT is now 7-5-2 overall on the season and 3-2-0 in conference action.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Early on at Clearview Arena, RMU picked up the tempo in the first period peppering 14 shots with five on goal through the first 11 minutes. RIT only threw four total shots and one on goal.

Special team units for both sides earned opportunities in the opening period.

RMU killed off all three penalties while RIT managed to fend off the Colonials only power play in the first 20 minutes. Neither program cashed in and headed into the middle frame scoreless.

Just 72 seconds into the second period, the Tigers put forth the first goal of the night.

The Colonials quickly had an answer as 42 seconds later, Calli Arnold caused a turnover in the corner. She swung a pass out to Mya Neugent in front of the net, tying up the game.

Through the remainder of the period, the Tigers scored four unanswered goals with three on the power play. The home side headed into the final frame down, 1-5.

Entering into the last 20 minutes, the Colonials started to fight back.

Receiving a power play chance, captain Wasyn Rice retrieved the puck along the boards and found Thalia D'Elia at the blue line. Taking a few steps in, D'Elia smoked a wrister past the glove of the goaltender.

About 10 minutes later, graduate forward Shailynn Snow on the forecheck battled for possession along the wall. She found her line mate Neugent across the ice. Her shot almost went in but Calli Arnold finished it off to bring RMU within two.

After scoring a pair of goals, the Tigers scored two more as well before the game ended, taking the first game of the series, winning 7-3.

COLONIAL FIRSTS
From Dodsland, Saskatchewan, sophomore Calli Arnold scored her first career goal tonight. Adding an assist, it was also her first multipoint game of her career. She recently dished out her first career point in the team's last game against Syracuse (11/14). Arnold now has three points in her last two appearances.

Also, graduate defenseman Wasyn Rice passed out her first helper of the season. She now has 13 career points at RMU (4-9—13).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
On the defensive end, Alaina Giampietro and Rice both finished with a team high three blocks. Giampietro along with freshman winger Janelle Evans each led in shots with six a piece. On faceoffs, centers Jersey Phillips and Catriona Crarer both won nine draws.

QUOTABLE
"We need to play together more as a unit. Unfortunately, we couldn't get away with two points this night so we have to put it in the past. But, we're excited to play tomorrow. The good thing about the two-game series is we get another crack at it. We'll be a desperate team tomorrow." – Head Coach Logan Bittle

UP NEXT
