Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU men's hockey team drops their Tuesday night contest at Canisius, 1-5. The Colonials are now 2-7-3 overall on the year and are 1-5-2 in the Atlantic Hockey conference. Canisius moves up to 3-7-1 in the 2023-24 season and 3-3-1 in conference play.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Playing one more contest before the Thanksgiving break, the Golden Griffins bolted ahead in the first period, registering 16 shots.
Through the opening 20 minutes, veteran goaltender
Chad Veltri battled in the crease making 15 saves for his team. Canisius came away with one goal on their 16
th shot.
Entering the second period, the Golden Griffins received a chance on the power play as Matteo Giampa extended the lead to two goals.
He then popped in his second goal of the night, making it 3-0, in favor of the home side with under eight minutes left in the period.
Following the second intermission, the Colonials headed to work on the power play in the opening five minutes of the final frame.
After Canisius blocked two shots, RMU regained possession and worked the puck back to the blue line.
Logan Ganie on the left side crossed his pass to
Michael Craig at the point. Dishing the puck over to
McKay Hayes near the right wall, he lined up his shot and sniped in a power play goal.
Over the next five minutes, the home side cashed in two more times. In the end, Canisius won, 5-1.
SOCHAN SEES TIME
Tending the twine for the last 7:32 of the game, netminder
Michael Sochan earned his first minutes in his collegiate hockey career. From Redwood City, Calif., Sochan arrived at RMU after playing a season in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) for the Surrey Eagles. Tonight, against the Golden Griffins, he made eight saves on eight shots.
HAYES ON THE POWER PLAY
Through the 2023-24 campaign, freshman forward
McKay Hayes wristed in his third power play goal of the season, leading all Colonials in that category. From Markham, Ontario, the power forward owns three goals, four assists and seven points on the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
In the faceoff circle, center
Dallas Tulik won a team-high 10 draws.
Charles Merkley won six of eight faceoffs on the night. Through three games he's taken 24 faceoffs, winning 75% of them.
Mitch Andres provided three blocks on the night. Running the point on the power play,
Michael Craig produced his fifth assist in the campaign and graduate forward
Logan Ganie added his fourth.
UP NEXT
After the Thanksgiving break, the Colonials have a quick turnaround, hosting Sacred Heart for a two-game set at Clearview Arena. Game one will be played on Friday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. The second contest is the following day with a scheduled puck drop for 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on SportsNet Pittsburgh.
