Giampietro's OT GWG Lifts RMU Over RIT, 3-2

Giampietro, Evans and Thompson all record multipoint efforts

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Freshman Alaina Giampietro's two-goal game leads RMU to a conference victory on the road, beating RIT, 3-2. RMU is now 11-16-0 overall on the year and 8-7-0 in CHA action. RIT is now 11-15-2 in the 2023-24 campaign and 5-10-0 in the conference.

1st PERIOD
  • The opening period ended in a 0-0 tie.
  • Graduate goaltender Emma Gorski recorded 16 saves through the first 20 minutes.

2nd PERIOD
  • RIT's leading scorer Kylie Aquaro put in the night's first goal six minutes into the middle frame.
  • Taking a penalty immediately after the goal, the Colonials killed it off and quickly responded after returning to 5on5.
  • Throwing a shot from the point by defenseman Gillian Thompson, freshman Alaina Giampietro hammered in the tying goal off a rebound.

3rd PERIOD
  • Entering the final frame, the Tigers scored the first goal of the period again, taking a 2-1 lead.
  • With under five minutes left, Jersey Phillips scored a crucial goal for the Colonials to tie up the score. Gillian Thompson passed the puck across the blue line to Courtney Hall along the right side. She dished the puck towards the net and Phillips tipped in the biscuit.
  • Gorski helped the Colonials send the game to overtime by making a last second stop on a RIT breakaway.

3on3 OVERTIME
  • The Colonials dominated possession and shots in the overtime period, pacing for five shots and only allowing one.
  • Freshman Alaina Giampietro would score her second goal of the game, sending RMU to victory. She skated with speed down the right side past a RIT defenseman and snuck the puck in just across the goal line, giving RMU their eighth conference victory of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Giampietro led all skaters in shots on goal with eight on the night. Defensively, Thalia D'Elia recorded a career-high five blocks against RIT. In net, Emma Gorski made 39 stops and registered a .951 save percentage. Combining for the overtime game-winner last weekend at Syracuse, Courtney Hall (1a) and Jersey Phillips (1g) each produced in tonight's win. After receiving CHA Defenseman of the Month honors, graduate defenseman Chloé Puddifant dished out one assist.

TWO POINTS
Against the Tigers, Gillian Thompson produced her fifth career multipoint effort with two helpers. One of those efforts was previously against RIT in the 2019-20 season. At center, Janelle Evans posted her fourth multipoint game of her first-year season. From Bethune, Saskatchewan, she's averaged a point-per-game in her last nine contests (2-7—9). She leads RMU in assists with 15. And, after being named to the HCA Rookie of the Year Watch List, Alaina Giampietro scored another game-winning goal for the Colonials. With her third GWG, this is Giampietro's first OT winner. She's recorded six multipoint efforts in the 2023-24 campaign and now two, two-goal games.
