MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's soccer team embarks on their first road trip of the 2024 season, taking on Southern Indiana on Thursday, August 22, at 8:00 PM ET. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
RICK SECURES FIRST WIN
RMU (1-0-0, 0-0-0 #HLWSOC) kicked off the season with an emphatic 5-0 victory over non-conference opponent Le Moyne. The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute when sophomore
Ava Trethewey delivered a pinpoint corner kick, which
Emerson Johngarlo headed in for her first career goal. Just before halftime, junior
Malia Kearns doubled the lead with a free-kick.
The second half saw RMU continue their dominance as
Paloma Swankler found the net two minutes in, courtesy of a cross from Kearns. Johngarlo added her second goal of the match off another corner, with assists from
Julia Becerra and
Madison Hurst. The scoring was rounded off in the 80th minute when
Joey Tomlinson tapped in her first career goal, assisted by
Haleigh Finale and Hurst, who earned her second assist of the game.
WEEKLY SWEEP
Following their commanding win, RMU swept the Horizon League's weekly awards. Johngarlo was named the Under Armour #HLWSOC Defensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals and anchoring the defense in a 90-minute shutout performance. Hurst made a memorable collegiate debut, contributing two assists and earning Offensive Player of the Week honors.
ALL-TIME VS. SOUTHERN INDIANA
This Thursday marks the first-ever meeting between RMU and Southern Indiana.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN INDIANA
Southern Indiana (0-1-0, 0-0-0 #OVC) opened their 2024 season with a 3-0 loss at Arkansas State University. In 2023, the Screaming Eagles posted a 4-8-7 overall record and a 3-2-4 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). They entered the OVC Tournament as the #4 seed, earning a first-round bye before being eliminated by No. 8 Little Rock, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.
