MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Despite grabbing a 2-1 lead in the second period, the RMU women's hockey team couldn't hold off a late push from RPI, falling 3-2 in Saturday's series finale at Clearview Arena. The loss completes an RPI sweep and moves the Colonials to 5-11-0 overall.
FIRST PERIOD
With just under four minutes left in the opening frame, RPI broke the ice with a shorthanded tally. Sabrina Beaudoin picked off a puck at the blue line, sped the length of the ice, and finished on a breakaway to give the Engineers a 1-0 advantage.
RMU had a quick response. Captain
Alaina Giampietro collected the puck in the corner, cut into the slot, and snapped a shot past the goaltender to even the score at 1-1.
Jessica MacKinnon picked up an assist on the play.
Chances remained limited for the rest of the period, with both teams registering five shots on goal.
SECOND PERIOD
RMU opened the middle frame with sustained pressure and earned a 5-on-3 power play early on. The Colonials capitalized as
Thalia D'Elia and
Rowyn Ringor worked the puck quickly around the zone, setting up
Taylor Storey in front for a power-play marker and a 2-1 lead.
Midway through the period, RPI appeared to tie the game on the power play, but the goal was overturned due to a high stick. The Engineers didn't have to wait long to get it back, however—seconds later, Aylah Cioffi knocked in a loose puck at the top of the crease to make it 2-2.
RPI regained the lead in the final minute of the period when Kendal Davidson fired a point shot through traffic, putting the Engineers ahead 3-2 with 34 seconds left. RMU controlled much of the play in the frame, outshooting RPI 18-9.
THIRD PERIOD
The Colonials pushed hard in the third, generating extended pressure and outshooting RPI 12-4. RMU pulled the goaltender in the final minutes and created several high danger looks, but couldn't find the equalizer, falling short 3-2.
