MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team dropped the series opener to Mercyhurst on Friday evening, falling 5-1 at Clearview Arena. The Colonials move to 5-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) action.
FIRST PERIOD
Mercyhurst struck early, opening the scoring less than four minutes into the contest as Nayeon Kim buried the game's first goal.
Just two minutes later, the Lakers capitalized off a turnover in RMU's defensive zone. Madison Nelson forced the change of possession and fed Jade Maisonneuve to extend the lead to 2-0.
RMU killed off one penalty late in the frame, but the Colonials trailed by two after 20 minutes while being outshot, 11-4.
SECOND PERIOD
Midway through the period, Mercyhurst converted on its second power play of the night when Julia Schalin found space in front and tapped home a 3-0 goal.
RMU nearly broke through with three minutes left as senior
Morgan Giannone ripped a shot off the post on a 2-on-1 rush.
However, Mercyhurst responded before the intermission, as Julia Perjus scored with just over a minute remaining to push the Lakers' advantage to 4-0. Despite the scoreline, the Colonials controlled much of the period and held a 15-10 edge in shots.
THIRD PERIOD
The Colonials got on the board at the 8:23 mark when
Jessica MacKinnon finished off a sharp passing play, wiring a shot home off a feed from Giannone.
Rowyn Ringor picked up the secondary assist.
A minute later, Mercyhurst appeared to restore its four-goal lead, but the tally was overturned following an offside challenge. The Lakers responded shortly after with a goal that did stand, making it 5-1.
RMU continued to generate chances, including another shot off the iron—this time from
Taylor Storey—but couldn't find additional offense.
