Colonials Drop Series to Mercyhurst

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Mercyhurst struck early and often on Saturday afternoon, scoring four times in the opening period on its way to a 7-2 win over RMU. The Colonials move to 5-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
RMU was awarded a power play just seconds into the game after Mercyhurst was assessed a protocol penalty, but the Colonials were unable to capitalize. Momentum shifted quickly as RMU took back-to-back penalties, giving the Lakers a 5-on-3 advantage. Mercyhurst converted to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Lakers continued their surge, adding goals in the 7th and 13th minutes to make it 3-0. After the third tally, RMU made a change in net as Maggie Hatch entered in relief of starter Lucy Phillips.
 
The Colonials responded with five minutes remaining, as Taylor Storey finished a feed from Rowyn Ringor to cut into the deficit. However, Mercyhurst added another goal in the final minute, taking a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
 
SECOND PERIOD
Mercyhurst added to its lead seven minutes into the period, scoring on its second power-play opportunity of the day. Two minutes later, the Lakers struck again to go up 6-1.
 
Following the sixth goal, freshman goaltender Yiyi Peng entered the game, making her collegiate debut. She stopped the first shot she faced at the 8:53 mark and went on to provide a steady presence in net to close the frame.
 
Despite being outscored, RMU outshot the Lakers 21-8 in the period.
 
THIRD PERIOD
Both teams traded power-play goals in the final frame. Emma Goding found the back of the net for RMU, converting off assists from Thalia D'Elia and Storey.
 
Mercyhurst held its lead the rest of the way to close out the 7-2 decision.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot Mercyhurst, 38-34. Morgan Giannone paced the Colonials with 10 shots on goal, matching her career high.
  • Special Teams: Mercyhurst went 3-for-5 on the power play, while RMU finished 1-for-5.
  • Thalia D'Elia blocked four shots, giving her 10 total blocks in the two-game series.
  • RMU owned the faceoff circle, winning 40 of 61 draws (65.6%). Sophomore Jessica MacKinnon dominated at the dot, going 21-for-26 (80.8%).
  • Freshman Mary Snyder finished with a team-best +1 rating.
 
COLONIAL FIRST
Freshman goaltender Yiyi Peng made her collegiate debut, playing the final 31:20 in net. The Cornwall, PE native, recorded 19 saves in her first NCAA appearance.
 
MULTIPOINT EFFORT
For the second time in her career, Taylor Storey registered a multipoint performance, contributing a goal and an assist. She now sits at three goals, nine assists, and 12 points on the season.
 
UP NEXT
RMU concludes its six-game homestand next weekend with a non-conference series against RPI. Game one is set for Friday, November 14, followed by game two on Saturday, November 15. Both games will be played at Clearview Arena and stream live on FloHockey.
