Colonials Cruise Past California (Pa.) at Home

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's basketball team picked up its third-straight win, beating California (Pa.) 72-44 to move to 7-2 on the year.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • After giving up the first basket of the game to California, RMU went on an 11-0 run to quickly find themselves up 11-2 over the Vulcans for their biggest lead of the first quarter.
  • RMU closed out the first quarter with a layup by Aislin Malcolm to put the Colonials up 15-7.
  • Eva Levingston powered the Colonial offense in the first quarter, scoring 11 out of 15 points for RMU.
  • On defense, RMU held the Vulcans to just 17.7% from the floor as California went 3-for-17 in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
  • RMU started the quarter up 10 as Jada Lee made a layup with 9:32 on the clock to put RMU up double-digits for the first time in the match.
  • A made three by Aislin Malcolm and a layup by Bailey Kuhns extended the Colonials' lead up to 15 as RMU led 29-14 with 1:45 remaining in the second quarter.
  • With 25 seconds on the clock, Cal was able to get a layup by Fanta Minteh to bring the lead down to 12 before a pair of made free throws by Bailey Kuhns put the Colonials back up by 14; ending the half up 32-18. 
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Colonial offense ignited for 24 points in the third quarter, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run to find themselves out 20.
  • RMU went up 23 points over the Vulcans at 2:14 as Layke Fields made a layup to put the Colonials up 52-29
  • A pair of free throws by Markeli Jones-Tynes with 11 seconds on the clock put the Coloinals ahead of Cal 56-35, taking a 21-point lead into the final quarter.
  • In the third quarter, RMU shot a game-high 56.3% percent from the floor, going 9-for-16.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Both teams struggled to score to begin the final quarter until the Colonials finally broke through with 7:18 on the clock, as Noa Givon hit a three to put RMU up 24.
  • The Colonials got their biggest lead of the afternoon on a layup by Dania McClain, which put RMU up 31 points over the Vulcans, with the score being 68-37 with 2:16 to go.
  • The Vulcans were able to get one final basket with five seconds to go in the game, making the final score 72-44 and giving the Colonials their third straight win.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
The Colonials had four players score in double-digits, with Eva Levingston leading the way with 16. Levingston also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds along with an assist. Aislin Malcolm was next on the board with 14 points, along with seven rebounds and four assists. Malcolm shot 50% from beyond the arc, going 2-for-4 on the night. Bailey Kuhns scored 11 from down low, along with six rebounds, while Layke Fields picked up 10 points and five rebounds to round out the double-digit scorers for the Colonials.
 
On the glass, RMU held a 46-33 advantage over the Vulcans while also holding California to under 30% shooting on the afternoon, with the Vulcans shooting 27.4% on 17-for-62 from the floor. RMU shot 45.6% from the floor and 84.2% from the free throw line in the win.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will return to Horizon League action this week, hosting Detroit Mercy (3-5 overall, 2-0 Horizon League) on Tuesday afternoon at the UPMC Events Center. They will close out the week against non-conference opponent Point Park on Friday night. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:00 p.m.
