RMU Volleyball Opens Horizon League Play with 3-1 Victory Over Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The RMU Volleyball team opened Horizon League play with a 3-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night. After dropping the 1st set, the Colonials (5-7, 1-0 HL) took the next three sets, extending their winning streak to three matches. The Mastodons (2-10, 0-1 HL) have now lost their last three matches.
 
After five ties in the 1st set, RMU took its first lead of the set after back-to-back PFW attack errors made the score 21-19. However, the Mastodons would win the next six points to take the 1st set 25-21.
 
Robert Morris used a 6-0 scoring run midway through the 2nd set to cruise to a 25-15 victory and even the match at one set apiece. The Colonials hit .323 and had a sideout percentage of 68%.
 
RMU controlled the 3rd set, winning the first four points and building a nine point lead at 18-9 and 21-12. A kill from Azra Eric set up set point at 24-17, but the Mastodons responded with six straight points to close the gap to 24-23, but a PFW attack error gave Colonials the set and a 2-1 match lead.
 
The 4th set was tightly contested from beginning to end, with the largest lead being a 10-7 RMU advantage. In all, there were 24 ties and nine lead changes. With the score deadlocked at 33-33, Layla Todd's ace followed by a PFW attack error gave RMU the match.
 
Jocelyn Jourdan had a season-high 18 kills and was one kill shy of tying her career-high. She set a career-mark with 57 swings. Kaitlyn Brown tied her season-best with 38 assists. Jasime Purakal recorded a match-high 19 digs. Keira Hornung posted a career-best nine blocks.
 
As a team, RMU eclipsed the 50-kill mark for the fourth time this season, registering 52, which was the most in a 4-set match this season. The Colonials' 75 digs and 13 blocks are the second-most this season.
 
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. serve. The match will not be streamed. The Colonials stay on the road for a midweek matchup at Youngstown State on Tuesday, September 30 before their conference home opener on Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 against Oakland.
