Women’s Hockey Drops Series to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – After striking first, RMU surrendered five unanswered goals as Mercyhurst claimed a 5-1 victory in the series finale. With the loss, the Colonials move to 10-16-2 overall and 6-10-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
RMU opened the scoring five minutes into the contest, capitalizing on its first power play opportunity. Morgan Giannone found the back of the net to give the Colonials an early 1-0 advantage, with Jessica MacKinnon and Linnea Misner recording assists on the play.
 
Mercyhurst answered later in the period on its own power play, as Julia Schalin evened the score at 1-1.
 
The teams headed into the first intermission tied after an evenly contested opening 20 minutes.
 
SECOND PERIOD
The Colonials outshot the Lakers 10-9 in the middle frame but were unable to regain the lead.
 
Mercyhurst scored twice in the period, as Julia Perjus and Jade Maisonneuve each netted goals to push the Lakers ahead 3-1 after two periods of play.
 
THIRD PERIOD
Mercyhurst put the game out of reach early in the third, scoring twice within the opening two minutes to extend its lead. The Lakers held on the rest of the way to secure the 5-1 win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Mercyhurst held a 31-25 edge in shots on goal, with Giannone and Hannah Thornton pacing RMU with four shots apiece.
  • MacKinnon won a team-high nine faceoffs, while Emma Goding led the defensive effort with three blocked shots.
  • RMU finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Mercyhurst converted on both of its opportunities.
  • Lucy Phillips started in goal for the Colonials, stopping 17 shots over 42:20 of action. Sophomore Ella Willoughby made her RMU debut in relief, playing the final 17:40 and recording nine saves.
 
UP NEXT
RMU continues its road swing next weekend at Penn State. The Colonials will take part in the historic outdoor game at Beaver Stadium on Friday, January 30 at 1:00 PM, before wrapping up the series indoors at Pegula Ice Arena on Saturday, January 31 at 6:00 PM.
