MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Canisius, falling 11-8 on Friday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.
1st HALF
Canisius opened the scoring with a 5-0 run before the Colonials got back on the board with a goal by
Taylor Burkett at 2:44, ending the first quarter with the Golden Griffins up 5-1.
The Golden Griffins extended their lead to begin the second quarter on a free-position goal before the Colonials put together back-to-back goals from
Gabi Puzevic and
Mia Berthoff to make it 6-3 with 11:51 left in the half.
Another goal by the Golden Griffins on a free-position shot made it 7-3 before a goal by
Lea Otts, assisted by Berthoff, cut Canisius's lead back to three. The Golden Griffins closed out the half with a goal from Ella Forcucci to make it 8-4 Canisius at the half.
2nd HALF
RMU opened up the second half on back-to-back goals from Berthoff, making the second hat-trick of the season for the Sophomore. Both teams picked up another goal, with RMU's goal from Berthoff cutting the Golden Griffins lead to just two before Canisius's Forcucci made it 10-7 with 3:55 left to end the third quarter scoring.
In the final quarter, each team recorded just one goal, with Forcucci striking first for the Golden Griffins to make it 11-7 before the Colonials ended the scoring with a free position goal from
Taylor Cadeau to make the final score 11-8.
LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
Mia Berthoff led the offensive attack for the Colonials, recording a team-high four goals, while RMU also got goals from
Gabi Puzevic,
Taylor Cadeau,
Taylor Burkett, and
Lea Otts in the loss. The Colonials' two lone assists came from Berthoff and Cadeau. Berthoff also recorded a team-high four groundballs.
In goal,
Katrina Bottomley was tagged with the loss, recording 11 saves and 11 goals for the Colonials.
Canisius outshot RMU 30-21, while 15-of-21 of the Colonials' shots came on goal.

RMU (1-1) will remain at home next Wednesday as the Colonials host cross-town rival Duquesne at Joe Walton Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
